Question An America Without the Penny...

The US Mint is thinking about retiring the penny. Can you imagine not having pennies anymore. I can't. It's part of our culture, even if they have outlived their usefulness. Hey, a penny is still worth something. Plus, what will the tooth fair leave our kids...credit cards?!?

Read the story here:Are Pennies Pound Foolish?

And can you believe a man saved his pennies for decades and collected $13,000 from Coin-star(coin-counting company) because the bank wouldn't count it all?Pretty funny story, especially since all the pennies sank the armored truck that was carrying them...it's in the article. Hehe

Hmm.

I have maybe a thousand pennys, in many containers around the house.. but would I scrounge them all up so I could make $10? Nope..

The penny is useless in today's world. Maybe theres a billion dollars worth of pennies out there, but nobody (except Mr. $13,000) really ever uses them. I keep a few in the car, in case I get taxed and something costs $5.01, I have a $10 bill and would rather not get change.

Get rid of them? No.. 'cause then the Japanese (Yen, which is worth less than a penny) and every other country would start to do the same thing.

Idk, I think it would just be pretty sad. There's something so enduring about the penny, no matter what there's gonna be a big fight against it.

And I bet the ones behind it are the dopes who throw them on the ground like they're useless. Blah!

Well for those that don't know my daughter lost her two front teeth last night and when I asked what the going rate for the toothfairy was she said $5!!! I don't think so.. I think it's more like 50 cents to a dollar... lol I think we shouild keep the penny. My kids pick them up and add them to the penny jar. Once the jar gets full of change we cash it in and go do something special..

I think it cost more money to make pennies, then they are actually worth. I say away with them!

yeah like what if you have something that is like $10.12? how exactly are you supposed to buy that when you cant geto to 12 cents without a dime and 2 pennies? I dont think they are going to do it. I mean yeah they could change everything to a higher/lower price to make it ever but eventually alot of people will lose alot of money.

LOL...what about the Japanese 1 yen piece? It's worth even less than a penny...and that's all I paid for to get my awesome Japanese cell phone! (Because they were going out of date and style - and it's still WAY better than the high priced cell phones we have here. Along with all the "standard" cell phone features now, I could watch all the local TV channels, browse the internet, and it also came with GPS and a Japanese/English - English/Japanese dictionary in it too!) Too bad it doesnt work in the United States...

The 1 yen piece looks like play money, and my friends and I would joke about that all the time over there. We would occasionally fling it at one another because we believed that the pebbles on the ground cost more to make. LOL! I have a ton of them left over from my study abroad trip, so if any of you really want one, just let me know. The funny part is will be that sending it will cost even more than the yen itself.

I say get rid of them.

I've had this thought in my head for ages.

Honestly, if you see a penny on the ground, do you always pick it up these days? I know I don't.

Its just more of a pain to deal with, in my opinion.

i still pick up pennies if they're heads up...

as for giving back change, the consumer is the one who loses here. Its like buying gas, you're actually paying like $3.789 per gallon. They just round up for the final total. So if something comes out to $10.12, i guess you'll actually be paying $10.15.

But i still love my pennies

I like pennies and I don't want to lose them. I hope they don't get rid of them.
