CliffyB (gorgeous game/level designer for Epic Games; see Gears of War!) just posted a bulletin on MySpace with a pretty useful URL to some advice about breaking into the video game industry as a designer, programmer, etc. It features advice from some of the industry's top developers and publishers. Check it out!

Nice Ripley. Man would it rule to work in the gaming industry. Heck, I'd be happy with being a secretary in the gaming industry.

Haha, I'm working on a portfolio for a concept artist position. That's like.. ultimate goal. Concept Artist and then maybe a Creative Director.

That's a really good article Ripley! Thanks for sharing. I actually do wish you the best of luck in your future plans as a concept artist. I hope that does work out for you. Don't give up on your goal because you can make it happen as long as you work on it. I've been trying for years to get hubby into thinking about working for the gaming industry. However, he doesn't think he's talented enough for it. I'm hoping that one day he'll really come to terms and look into what he actually loves best which is his games.

I would love to work in the gaming industry, its been a goal of mine for years, except well I'm a writer and rarely do I hear or read about writers getting hired or sought after. I don't think it helps that I dropped out of college either.

Thanks for sharing Ripley! And best of luck in your quest to break in as a concept artist.
I'm also looking to break in the gaming industry as a Game Programmer. I worked 4 years and a half as a Web Developer and found that what I really wanted to do was program games not websites. So I quited my job, I'm back to school, now at University, and my plan to break in is in motion! If I can add to the advice given in the article. If there is an IGDA Chapter close to you attend to those meeting. You'll meet great people in the industry and even people like you trying to break in. This network of friends will be able to give you contacts, advice or even review your portfolio and tell you what is great and what is missing |

It has always been a dream of mine to become a gaming journalist, preferably for IGN Entertainment. Writing for software is also something of interest. I've taken as many English AP's as I possibly can and I'm preparing to major in Journalism during college. |

Believe it or not cscc.edu which is the site for columbus state has gaming classes and is pounding out a game degree for fall qtr. Right now i'm taking intro to digital games industry
and next qtr i'll be taking intro to game design so hopefully in a short time i'll be in the industry. It's only a 2yr degree but fortunatlly it focuses more on the art side than the programming side though i'm sure i'll have to learn some 3d modeling programs..it's going to be really interusting. I'm using a program called game maker and trying to get a basic game up and ready to be e-mailed to the prof for mon. It's still a work in progress as it's got basic things down but making it run is more chalangeing. |

Nice Find, I know alot of us Would love to be involved in the Videogame industry somehow.
I'm more on the Writers side of thing if it ever happened to me. There are a couple of schools out there that train students for that kinda thing... If I had the Money Then I would be in School doing so. I Like how each company explained what kind of candidates they look for and from what I read there, Being Passionate it's important. Maybe someday some of us may be involved in the industry some way, Who better than those who enjoy playing the games? Those who enjoy a game's storyline, Design and gameplay and understand the hard work that goes into making it happen. |

I'm doing a BSc in programming atm based around the games industry, essentially its C++ but within a game engine. And if art is more your thing then concept artists are quite saught after, and whats best is both the programming and the arts side have the potential to aspiring to a lead designer.
Here in the UK its one of our biggest entertainemnt industries, I'm looking forward to seeing Rare in our second year... thats gonna be awesome. |
