Taken from a '93 Time article on MK and the violence in Games...
...Of course, there are better ways to let off steam. As it is, American kids who have video-game machines already play, on average, nearly 1.5 hours a day. For many parents, the problem is not what their children are doing on their Nintendo systems, but what they are not doing while locked in Mortal Kombat -- reading books, playing outdoors, making friends. When the information highway comes to town, bringing with it a thousand new reasons to spend time in front of a video screen, that may be a growing problem not just for the kids, but for all of us.
How times have changed. During the height of my Halo 2 passion, I spent roughly 1550 hours over period of 2 years, 10 months (with a possible 17792 hours in that time - barely counts for anything, doesn't it... and for the math less inclined, that's a 8.71% spent in playtime) and since the beginning of June, I've spent well over 402 hours on ONE character in Wow, (29.91% playing time of 1344 possible hours, or 15.7% of 3504 possible hours since I started playing in Feb...).
And I still manage to read a book. Or two. And I'm pretty sure I'm no more violent then prior to playing videogames - although my boyfriend might disagree. Just don't get between me and wow....
Not bad.

I think the MMO actually make gamers more social, and well at working with others. Anyone who has seen a 40 person raid can attest to that. Nice write up, keep up the good work, and tell your man I am starting a widowers of WOW social group to do something while our significants play WOW. wow indeed.Posted 07-21-2008 at 05:13 PM by H2O Double B
