CODW@W Beta: Post-Traumatic Short Response

It's damn familiar. The lobbies, the perks, the ranking system, the load in, the status screens. The little tips and reminders. The grendade indicator seems more detailed, the guns sound different, but mostly it's COD4.... downgraded. You can really tell that the COD4 engine is running this thing, but the facade is a mockery of what could have been wrought by better hands.
So what about CODW@W did IW not contribute: The Maps... and the maps, suck.
Imagine Bloc over and over again. All three map oiferings at this point are large, cluttered pathways centered around a focal point that is certain death for anyone that wanders towards it. So far I have done well by staying to the perimeter and keeping out of tanks, and off of ledges. The maps remind me of that fatefull three hours I played COD3; and kept getting stuck on a board laying on the ground, or a mysterious plant in the middle of a path.
There is simply too much **** in the maps. It's like my grandmothers house, but instead of cats you have killer dogs. With the maps being the only thing that makes this a Treyarch game.... my vote is that they move away from COD and leave it IW for any future series.
Release the HOUNDS!!!

aww...
i thought the lack of a central area where most of the action took place was one of the very few things lacking in CoD4... I always envisioned (thankfully I've never experienced) a war as both types of combat.. stealthy actions followed by a larger central battle..
Personally.. I love that Treyarch is still involved in the CoD series.. CoD4 would have been very different without CoD3 introducing small changes we take for granted now... like classes and destructible cover..
I think activision has it right by using two developers that seem to play well off each other.
Though WWII isn't everyone's favorite, I've played like 20 hours of the demo already and the more time you spend with it, and the more you learn the maps, the more you appreciate the little additions and refinements made by treyarch that will likely make IW's CoD5 (rumored to be FUTURE warfare... ??!) that much better in the 2009.
Just an opinion...Posted 10-14-2008 at 10:03 AM by Zwanka
