They did the same thing to Flame of Recca and Angel Sanctuary.. oh and Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM). All good stuff, all weird endings midway through the manga...

Manga picks up at about chapter 119 if you want to keep reading after wards, and it has recently just finished at 357.
It is definitly worth the read and the anime covers everything between the start of the manga up to where it stops. (except for one tiny chapter about nue, but it's not a big deal)

Been a fan more anime when I started watching the boxing anime called Hajime No Ippo and Bleach I got more into it then D.Grayman and etc I started reading Manga notice it better then anime
