Electronic sports comprises the competitive play of video games. Other terms include competitive gaming, professional gaming, e-sport, and cybersport. The most common video game genres associated with electronic sports are real-time strategy (RTS), fighting, first-person shooter (FPS), massively-multiplayer online (MMOG), and racing. Games are played competitively at amateur, semi-professional and professional levels, and some games have organized competition in the form of leagues and tournaments. Events such as Major League Gaming (MLG), Global Starcraft II League (GSL), World Cyber Games (WCG), Dreamhack, Intel Extreme Masters, and Global StarCraft Team league (GSTL) provide both real-time casting of streamed games, and cash prizes to the winners.

Well, in general terms Esports is really the BUSINESS of professional/competitive gaming. Its no longer about a few big tournaments here or there, or maybe a few teams/individuals who are good enough to win money a few times a year. It is really about how we monetize competitive gaming, make it a sustainable business, and put together a product that eventually allows Pro gamers to be just that.

It is a lot more than just having a professional team, or a professional league and being good enough to compete, but is about showing the value of the team/player/business model to our sponsors and potential sponsors/investors so that it becomes more of a partnership. Because in reality, companies don't just hand over money, you have to show them where their return is on their investment. And I think that Esports is really about putting together a total product that not only gets results at the events, but also building a sustainable business model that allows you to continue to grow in the long-term.

So why is this Esports forum here, and what is all this new stuff? Well, as Tic said... stay tuned :). However, one might make the assumption that we have a goal to not only put a bigger emphasis on Professional gaming, but the entire Esports business that surrounds it. That we want to become more than just an organization with a few pro teams, but a business that is a leader in showing the value and the growth of competitive gaming.

Now, that doesn't mean you would be assuming correctly, but one could assume so if they so desired......

basicly, heres some mixed examples of eSports tournaments:

my definition is its like football, but on the computer, everyone is playing for something, it could be fun, the feeling of victory, self satisfaction, The adrenaline rush from a large engagement or team fight, and u know when people play football with friends u have fun, where there are also people who play for big teams like the Colts and get paid for it. and also there aren't much difference between Pro football players and Pro Video gamers to begin with. let me give u an example, in the world of pro Sc2 players we have this guy

EG (Evil Geniuses) Team leader EGiNcontrol

who lives in this Mansion with his team and all there girlfriends ect

http://www.esportsfrance.com/images/warwolf/EG_House_1.jpg

He is also Engaged to a Supermodel like the typical football player

(don't get me wrong she rocks and i wanted to slap everyone who didn't vote for her for maxim gamer girl, she plays starcraft and streams occasionally, and she contributes a lot of her time to eSports like the MLG ect.)

they also go to the gym and work out like football players do

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHaDsqKZ-gM

on top of that they have big sponsors like Kingston HyperX, Monster, and beyond gaming, just like the typical football team or nascar driver.

Not to long from now it will be something you might be able to see on TV channels like ESPN, it is rapidly gaining Popularity and in other countries, lets take korea for example, it is already a huge deal, It is safe to say the Starcraft Broodwar is there national sport, slowly moving into Sc2, players such as Flash are role models and have brought their families great honor.

P.S. when i say football im talking American football.

Changing the public perception is whats key to eSports. Most people relate games to laziness. In Korea as mentioned StarCraft is seen no differently from football.

eSports is not just about the business side of gaming. eSports is propelled by individuals who want to be the best and by fans who enjoy watching them. The best argument I can think of for this is that 'professional gamers' or 'eSport athletes' know they are spending many many hours to become the best at something in return for little.

Take the best StarCraft 2 player for example. He is Korean and has made about $300,000 (source - http://sc2earnings.com/). Yes, this is a lot of money but this is one of the best players in the world who has beaten thousands of other professional gamers time and time again.

eSports is about fans and teams. The business side of eSports is required to fund tournaments which allow gamers to practice full time. The top gamers in the world practice 8-14 hours a day. This level of practice is what pushes the limits of human ability. Have you ever checked your Actions Per Minute (APM) in StarCraft and compared it with a professional? It isn't luck and it isn't genetic. It's years of practice and training.

Anyway eSports is about competition. With the ability to play against people from anywhere in the world through the internet it has created an easy way to compete on the world stage. Playing football you are limited to your location until you can justify traveling. With eSports it is much easier to play on the national level by winning ladder games.

Just my two cents. Take it with a grain of salt :)

well e sports is game of tournaments, players and the companies which provide the chance to the players to play the tournaments and on winning reward the players.
its the new revolution on internet these days as through spread of the culture of online playing of games with paying some charges to game providers.

eSports simply means playing video games rather than playing real life.
