For the anime fans out there, what was the saddest anime that you've ever watched that caused you to choke up? :P
For me personally there were two, the second half of Fushigi Yuugi and the anime Chrno Crusade.

Off the top of my head, I'd say Fullmetal Alchemist had some very sad bits.

From TV series, it was Lain. I cried in almost every episode.
But the saddest of all is the OVA of Samurai X: Reflections. It hurts so bad... Everyone I know who watched it cried badly too.

Uhm, well...I'll add some unmentioned ones:
Shuffle! starts off very happy, and everything starts to break down as various characters' issues come in, lots of very sad and painful stuff going on.
ai5h1teruze baby(sorry, it was edited so i subbed numbers for letters) was a very touching anime, in many parts (about a teenage guy basically stuck raising a child who was left by her mom (his aunt))
RahXephon there's a lot of character depth and history mixed in, i cried afterward when i watched an AMV about it called: Euphoria. Watch it AFTER rah xephon though!
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien VERY SAD! about a boy who's love is hit in a car accident while waiting for him (he's late for a date). She gains amnesia for a long time, and he tries to cope; while a common friend of theirs tries to cheer him up (she's in love with him but stood aside for her before the accident).

There are too many moments, in different animes that I have watched.
Grave of the Fireflies, when a certain someone passes away... (if I say who, it'd ruin the movie) the feeling of losing someone that depends on you is one of the worst feelings to have.
Next in line is Samurai X: Reflections, there again someone special (vague for the same reason), gets killed trying to stop a fight. That was VERY sad.
Naruto, there are like too many parts(might as well say or hint these), Haku and Zabuza's deaths, Choji's realization of his true friends (if you knew the situation, you'd totally understand), Gaara's death, Chiyo's sacrifice, Asuma's death, the Pervy Sage's epic battle with the six paths of pain.
Elfen Lied, Mariko's(aka #35) reaction when her father pulled a gun on her... yeah I won't lie I counted 3 tears... *ahem* A-ANYWAYS, it was sad.
Code Geass... Shirley's last words and a certain other death that was required so that people like Nunally could live equally, but seeing how she cried... the poor girl... to lose someone willing to sacrifice everything for her to be happy...
ToraDora, when Minori accidentally broke the star for the christmas tree that Taiga brought. Minori was shaking so much and felt so bad, you can tell because of how she was shaking as she was desperately trying to fix the star. OMG... and when Ryuuji yelled at his mom! I felt so bad for her right then... the words he said are what hurt her, I got really sad with how she reacted... =/
Crap all this remembering is getting to me... <.<;

Would have to agree with you lot here; Grave of the Fireflies was the most saddest anime movies I've watched.
For tv series, I'd have to say "She, The Ultimate Weapon" was pretty sad, too.

for me only bits of certain animes have had their sad moments:
Knights of the Zodiac:
When the Knight Cygnus Hyoga has to kill his own master because he was brainwashed by the evil leader of the sanctuary (who is actually Gemini Saga)
During the battle with the 12 golden knights where Shiryu fought Shura of capricorn, Hyoga fought Camus of Aquarius, and Shun's fight against Aphrodite of Pisces.
also later on down the line where the gold knight of Libra Dohko is reunited with his longtime friend Shion of Aires but he only had 12 hours of life due to Hades bringing him back to life as a specter, the dialogue they share during his final hour.
Cowboy Bebop: the episode where spike trains rocko and helps him deliver a flower which will make rocko's GF be able to see again but rocko dies in a firefight and the final 2 episodes of the series "the real folk blues".
i think someone already mentioned the FMA one where the one character with the glasses dies (i forget the name).
i cant think of more right now so ill edit it later but these are the main ones.

Grave of Fireflies for sure made me bawl.
Yeah that was the one anime to really open my eyes to the rest of the anime that I was missing out on. It really made me sad to see how that movie ended, but it was a very realistic story of what happened during those times.

Havent seen Grave of Fireflies, but it sounds very sad.
For me it would have to be Full Metal Alchemist, it's a very "real" show dealing with a lot of adult issues, death being the main one. The tale of two brothers that made a horrible mistake out of loneliness and love. No one here can say there isn't someone gone we would give anything to have back.

The first anime i watched was the saddest. It was called Now and Then Here and There. It made me not want to watch any more animes for a while. War, child exploitation/abuse/rape, life/death, it really was sad especially when you got to the ending credits. That almost, almost made me tear up. But my manliness stopped it XD<----YOU LIE!

OMG! When Obito died it killed me!!
I felt bad for Jiraya when he was thinking back on his past failures, that was totally getting to me, because that was end for him, but thankfully he remembered Naruto!
Itachi wasn't really a bad guy, all along he did all those things for his brother.

Whenever you get the chance to watch the episodes, check them out on Hulu.com, right now they are a week late with sending out episodes on Shippuden, but it is good quality! Lol!
