I just happen to stumble on this video I saw online late last night on how the sensor bar works for the Wii. The crazy thing is they are LED IR emitters which are sending IR beams out and I am guessing the Wii remote picks that up to determine left and right. From the video this person made his own sensor board using hardware you can find in Radio Shack. Soldered 4 or 5 LED IR emitters from each side and to power it a battery pack to power the LEDs. The wire you have to the sensor bar doesn't relay any information other than power the LEDs. Now I can make my own bar without having to have a ghetto box in the middle of my screen so my wii remote can pick it up since I have a vid project that I play off of.

Another thing if you take a video camera and turn off the lights, look at the sensor bar you can see that it emits the LED lights.

Can you snag that video at all and put a link up here? It definitely is something interesting, especially considering the potential limitations that IR presents over, say, RF. I was aware of the basic technology, but the homebrew hardware option is rather intriguing.

There is a lot of video claiming you can use candles as a wii sensor bar because it emits IR. I tried it out but that didn't work for me, a lot of those videos are on youtube.

I actually tried the candles thing and it works. Just have to make sure they are the long candles (not in a jar) and are evenly spaced where the emitters would be on the sensor bar and centered. I was amazed it worked out really. Learned the trick from watching G4.
