Depends how much money you're are willing to spend, Canon/Nikon are probably the best, i have a Sony a290 cost me around £400.

The Canon Rebel series is very good. That's what I'd recommend, but I'm a Canon girl. Nikon is also very good, but when I was researching I found that the Canon had more options in the price range, and I've used both systems...I also found it to be more user friendly and I felt my pictures looked better (but again, I'm a Canon girl). Hope this helps :)

It's hard to say what one you should get for your first good camera. What ever you decide to get you'll be dropping hundreds of dollars on, not to mention lenses you might want such as a Macro lens, Wide Angle lens ect. Lenses can cost more then your DSLR itself depending what one you get of course.

Like others have said Nikon/Canon are probably the best, a lot of professionals use them cameras too.

The Nikon D5000 is amazing and the price just dropped. Both Nikon and Canon are amazing. One of the main reasons I picked Nikon is because I can buy a lens and use it on any Nikon, you can't do that with Canon. Canon makes you match up models and accessories. It depends on what you want to do with the camera and if you want to grow into a professional career. I'm in college for photography now and I have one teacher who loves Canon and the other Nikon. Do some research and go into a store so you can get a feel for them. I know people like to say one is more comfy to hold than the other and things like that.

Another great lens is a 50mm prime, I use it all the time and is great for taking photos of people.

What kind of things do you learn about in college Origns? I would love to go to college or even do courses even though I'm getting on a bit now (23) lol. I've been learning from books kinda makes it more of an expensive hobby :P

Not sure what you mean about the lenses, origins. Unless you mean you can't use an older lens from a regular SLR on a DSLR? Or you can't use a lens on a 35mm camera that was designed for a camera that shoots full frame? Or something else? Because as far as I know, that's the only restriction on lenses. I could be wrong, it's been a few years since I bought a new one, and all of my current one's are 35mm so I don't need new lenses. If I ever upgrade to that fabulous new 5D, then yeah, a whole new system.

But that's an over $2000 camera body alone. By the point you need that, you'd be wanting all new equipment anyway. DSLR's only last a few years.

Canon makes a very nice all purpose lens that you can invest in when you get the extra money, and you will rarely have to change your lens. It runs about $500. I am a pro, and I still use it at weddings. I only use 2 lenses, bc weddings don't really afford you the time to change lenses properly. :)

Nikon is a fabulous system too btw. Didn't mean to come across that it wasn't. ALOT of pros use that system, and they love it. It's just what you prefer that matters :)

:) My classes cover most of the basic technical stuff- exposure, lighting, composition, and photoshop. At the moment we are using Lightroom though, another Adobe product. I'm 24 and just finished my first semester and 85% of my class was over 35 so don't let that hold ya back Trigger.

I remember going into the local shop here when I was trying to decide what to get and was told if I bought a lens for something like a camera in the Rebel collection and decided to upgrade in the future I wouldn't be able to use the same lenses unless I stayed with a Rebel. Imay have misunderstood that... :/

I was absolutely set on a Canon until I got my Nikon, they both have their perks and are both great brands. It's almost as stupid as the xBox vs. PS argument - there is no right answer xD

And YES! such an expensive thing to pursue. I didn't realize just how much at first. I spend over $200 just on paper this first semester. I can't wait to be comfortable enough with the skill to get more into the professional world. :D
