Does anyone have a problem with overheating?
I'm pretty sure I don't play long enough for it to overheat because about 3 minutes in playing my PS3 fans go obnoxiously loud and turns off during a game. When I'm not doing anything heavy duty like sitting on the XMB screen its okay.

I tried opening it up and clearing out the dust and changing the thermal paste but I made it go from 3 to 1 minute ahaha.

How much thermal paste do I usually need to apply?
Any other solution? (Not including tossing it in the trash and going to Xbox) :P
Thanks.

Edit/// News just in I tried turning it on today before opening it up to fix it..... dun dun dun YLOD. Lucky me.

Toss it in the trash and go to.... I MEAN i thought you could buy things that like cool it down, i've seen fans for the three sixty's... im not sure if you could mod it and put another fan in though!

Probably right, I'm gonna try opening it up again today. Oh by the way this was the "fixed' PS3 Sony sent me after selling me a faulty one. Probably gonna go to Xbox though, still got mine since launch date and that thing still works wonder.

if your keeping it on a carpet try keeping it on a wooden or glass surface, plus this prevents dust from getting in

what i do with my 360 is keep it in front of the AC vent, I had a problem with my 360 over heating and sent it to get fixed, and ended up getting pissed at my ex because he sold it when i told him not to, anyways long story short i got a new 360 slim line and i keep it in front of the ac vent. It seems to help with the heat and keeps everything pretty cool for the most part. Although I do have it sitting on the box it came it to reach the vent lol

I'd like to add to this thread and say that it seems that the PS3 Fat versions (the big bulky ps3s) tend to eventually die with the YLOD. The Slims are, however, hardly are prone to it, and are better as blu-ray players than the old ps3s, if you have a nice receiver/preamp, as it is able to use the highest level of HD audio codec for BD movies, if you are an audio fanatic.

In either case, if you are to buy a ps3 again, go with the slims, cuz they are much more durable, and definitely isn't as hot. But if you really want to go with the 360 go ahead.

Otherwise, if you really can't invest in buying another console and make do what you got, you'll just have to repair the YLOD. There's millions of videos about how to do it on Youtube, but it takes a lot of time to repair it. Even when you do repair it, it won't last very long; it's gonna be part of your job to do maintenance work. It may die every few months.

I dont know much about ps3 but I keep my 360 on a wooden table and its in a position where air can circulate unde it as well

For 360 it works well like that, or to put it on top of books or cardboard box, etc, because air flows below and above the 360 from its side vents. The ps3 does not vent out like that; all the air comes out from the back. Well, actually, the Fat PS3 may come out from the sides and bottom front, but the whole thing of putting a 360 on a shelf or book, etc, doesn't apply to ps3, because the FAT ps3 has a bottom stand integrated, which won't block the vents, if you set it on carpet. 360 has that problem, but not the ps3.

Regardless the FAT ps3 still has problems with the heat. FAT PS3s overall seem to be problematic; I thikn the OP should just go with the Slim since it's much more efficient at heat levels, and the engineers have engineered the Slim much better than the Fat version.

the easiest and cheapest thing i can think of is go to wal-mart and get one of those small desk fans and blast that ish on the ps3. i got a big fan from big lots that rotates 360 degrees and i keep it by my entertainment center for my tv, ps3, and xbox. it helps to keep things cooler.

I never had any probs with my fatty, but I eventually replaced it with a slim. Needed the GB's for my growing collection of games ;)

According to me there is no medicine, but it is necessary for you to have the patient and try to understand others, don't take any decision which lead to make your life dam, so relaxed and try to understand the situation.

I'm not married nor have I ever dated anyone lol. I was using the term divorce as an analogy toward my PS3 :P.
