i have been struggling with this for a while. every time i almost finish loading a server my game shuts down. any ideas?

Yeah, gotta be the settings. Your comp is pretty much a notch lower than mine on everything (except the sound card), and I haven't had a problem with 2142.

Those are decent hardware specs, it's just a hair faster than mine and while I have mostly low settings it runs fine when it works.
I had trouble with crashes right after the server load too. The problem was the integrated sound card. BF 2142 can be very picky with sound settings.
There's a few things that may help:
Try disabling VoIP.
Turn of EAX.
Drop the sound to low quality.
One option in the upper left of the audio settings screen has a choice between software and hardware (i'm not remembering the exact name off the top of my head). Switch that to software.

i finally got around to trying this. didnt work.

Update your graphics card and sound card drivers. You can find your drivers for both below.
