View Full Version : SWTOR - Republic Players Server-type Discussion (PLS READ IF YOU PLAN ON BEING REP.)

Alright fellow Republic-hopefuls,

I'm going to create our pre-launch guild on the SWTOR site, but we need to decide what server type we want to play on. Our choices are PvP or PvE.

For those of you non-MMO fluent folks:

PvP (Player-vs-Player) - Certain planets will be deemed "Republic," "Sith," and "Neutral." While you are on a planet controlled by your faction, you are safe from being attacked by the opposite faction. If you happen to be on a Neutral or Enemy-controlled planet, ANY enemy player can openly attack you, REGARDLESS of what you are doing or any level differences. While this may sound fun to some, try to imagine those days of trying to quest or grind or gather resources from a specific area, and there just so happens to be an enemy player 30 levels higher than you preventing you from progressing. It is definitely geared more towards the gamer who plays hours a day, reaching max level only a month or so after launch. It is also attractive to trolls who seek pleasure by ruining other players' experiences.

Or...

PvE (Player-vs-Environment) - Players are safe from attack by enemy players unless they CHOOSE to flag themselves for PvP. This means you will be able to run right past that level 50 Sith Warrior on your way to your quest; no matter how hard he /taunts you. It is geared a bit more towards the casual player who likes to hop online, do a few things without being interrupted by pesky grievers, and hop off after an hour or 2; but that doesn't mean that PvP doesn't occur. Do not forget about the PvP battlegrounds that groups can queue up for. Also, with so many people playing, I'm sure there will still be open-world PvP between flagged players on these servers.

After playing SWG for 6 years, a game where every server was PvE, I have to vote PvE.

Between the battlegrounds, designated PvP areas, and the ability to flag yourself for PvP, I think it is extremely appreciated to have the chance to say "You know what? I don't feel like PvPing today."

I am open-minded, however, and respect that this should be a community decision, so...

VOTE!

PS - Please, if you are planning to play Sith, but also plan on having a Republic alt, go ahead and vote, but state that fact. I want everyone's opinion, but if you're main is going to be Sith, please don't tip the vote away from what those that have Republic mains want.

Current Votes:
Main PvE: 4
Main PvP: 2

Alt PvE: 3
Alt PvP: 4

Undecided PvE: 0
Undecided PvP: 1

I'm definitely planning on getting SWTOR but as yet I haven't really decided which faction I will choose. I reckon I'll have made my mind up when the beta for this is opened and I can have a good look at the racial attributes and benefits etc.

As for the server type, PvE does sound good compared to the PvP I'm playing on in Rift. I've been ganked a fair bit on PvP so it would be good to see the difference when, as you say, you can do your own thing without interuption from opposite factions but still opt to turn PvP on if you're feeling brave.

Here's hoping we find out info on the beta for this soon.

Sith FIGHTING!! Hahaha.. but in all seriousness, it will be great to have both as options for people to eventually create alts and be able to play both sides and such. I am sure Ill make one here down the road too =P

Naturally, I would vote for PvP, but as an alt account I probably wouldnt care a ton. PvE could always be easier when leveling up a lowbie account on a server where people are already leveled for awhile. Although P.S- SWG was most definitely more of a PVP system. I thought it was the best system, because it was pretty much open-pvp anywhere you go IF you decided to choose a faction and declare, or gain a temp flag by helping out a faction. BUT for anyone who wanted no part in this, you could quite simply not choose a side, or not declare.

You, Sir, just described a PvE server... lol :mvreallyhappy:

No, PvE servers are far different, as there is very little if any open-world pvp. You are stuck to battlefield instances, or maybe special games. In SWG, you could fight anywhere, any time if you wanted to. Plus at the same time, the TEF system made it even more so, because you could not heal someone of the same faction without being drawn into a fight.

But none of this really matters....

id vote PvP. PvE servers are just plain boring to me, but as others have said it would be an alt so my opinion isnt that huge. Nothing better than going to a neutral zone and killing some people for fun :]

Why not just have it on the same ever as the sith guild? We'd be able to play against each other!

That's one of the reasons we're NOT doing it on the same server. Will most definitely lead to drama. We don't like drama.

H2O neB: I'll get it, and I'll play rep side for sure
H2O Mobyus1: what server type would you want?
H2O neB: PvE
H2O neB: Always hated PvP

H2O Merlyn: id be republic
H2O Merlyn: DOWN WITH THE EMPIRE!
H2O Mobyus1: server type?
H2O Mobyus1: PvE or PvP?
H2O Merlyn: PvP ofc.
H2O Merlyn: PvE is boring.

+1 PvE

Here's some reasoning...I compete against my own clan members in League of Legends...I see no reason for drama if everyone is mature. Competition is friendly and safe.

I vote PVP

if its a pve server you can count me out of the Rep.

Why would there be drama? I think it'd be more competitive and fun than any thing

I see no reason for drama if everyone is mature.
:mvagree:

Unfortunately, there will be times where players will be on with no leadership to moderate. This leads to drama. Always. Guaranteeing that every member that joins is going to "mature" is impossible. Even mature members can slip up from time to time. Especially in an MMO where, chances are, you'll see the same people again and again.

if its a pve server you can count me out of the Rep.

And there are players that are out if it's a PvP server...

This is why it's a vote.

Why would there be drama? I think it'd be more competitive and fun than any thing

Those that enjoy PvP will find it competitive and fun. Those that don't will find it annoying and frustrating. Also, having a Republic and Empire guild on the same server is almost like a conflict of interest. There will be times where someone on one side will be trying to do something somewhere, and someone on the other side will kill them.

Now, throwing this back into Kestral's court, sure: if both players are mature, this should be a null issue.

However, if the player who died gets on Vent and says to the player who killed him "Hey, why did you kill me? I was trying to finish X quest!" and the other responds with something like "It's part of the game! Deal with it!" (Which I can almost promise you will happen as it has in the past)...

BAM!!! Drama llama.

It's just not worth it. Not for the players. Especially not for the leaders. More work and nothing to show for it.

As stated in another thread by Ticorah, we will allow 2 division, one for each faction, on different server. That's not Moby's decision, it's the General's and it's not up for discussion.

Now back on the topic of the vote: PvE vs PvP

I'm gonna play Sith but I'll probably end up having a republic alt.

I would like the idea of our Sith and Republic factions being on the same server but I can see how it would cause problems. Still would be fun for the more mature players :)

As for pve vs. pvp, I've played both server types on wow and I played pve on SWG. pvp is fun but depending on the players can get frustrating (camping quest givers and objectives, raiding spawns, etc.). I like pve because you can choose not to pvp but pvp feels more like war and more like the two factions are fighting. More like Starwars to me anyways.

So to summarize that
+1 alt PvP

I like what Obsidian says. Star Wars is about... well, wars, so I guess PvP for the more feeling of the battle and all. And hopefully I'll have the game to be able to play it on release day

I'm goin Republic, my vote is for a PvE server. If I want to fight other players I'd much prefer to do so in battlegrounds than in the overworld.

I'm definitely voting PvE...I mean, PvP is fun, but if you play on a PvE server, the PvP side of things is now optional. Some people don't like PvPing, so if you play on a PvE server and never enable PK mode, there's nothing to worry about...you can go about your life with no worries about being PK'ed.

I am DEFINITELY getting this game, and I am DEFINITELY creating a rep main. I've always been partial to PvP, myself. PvE just becomes so repetitive that the fun wears out very quickly for me. So I have to go with PvP or I just won't be as excited about the game. When playing KotOR and KotOR2 I always wished they were multiplayer games, and now my wish is coming true. PvP fo' sho.

Not sure if I'm getting it or not, but I'm definately going on a PvP server, regardless of what the clan picks...and I'll probably end up being Empire.

Okay, yeah, I'm definitly going to be an Imperial Agent, and will definitly be requesting off work for an entire week to play this game. I'll be playing on the PvE server, so anyone want to set up a Party Quest group for when the game comes out?

I'm voting PVP because I kinda like being able to walk right up to someone thats in territories I control and attacking them because they aint looked hard enough on their territories to find something and personally I hope they make it where you can PvP your self to the highest lvl

Please keep this thread on topic, so if you have nothing to add to the discussion or are not answering the OP question, just don't post. Pretty simple ;)

Now, H2O Mobyus1, did you make the Republic Guild already? If so please make a new thread with the info and I'll sticky that one.

Are you able to use the Pandora name even if the Empire guild is using it or because its Sith, you can?

I'll be playing both guilds and since that one is PvP, I'll vote PvE for this one (not like you can't fight as well lol). Anyway, it fits more with peaceful classes who rather mind their own business or keep the peace. I'll set up recruitment forums for this shortly.
