If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. It can be very easy to do something wrong here and the last thing you want to do is mess up your home network setup. I have messed with most brands of home routers, and all the major ones, and I'm sure lady is familiar with them as well, the best thing to do if you are unsure about anything is just ask.
Otherwise nice guide, def a boon for people who have connection problems. Just a word of warning, some routers just really hate xbox live. I spent ages trying to coerce my US Robotics router to work properly, but after talking briefly with e it looks like USR just doesn't have its act together when it comes to meshing with the xbox live network. Linksys, Dlink, and Netgear all should be perfectly fine if you have it set up properly, as well as most of the default junk that your ISP may provide you (westell is a common one for example with verizon)

The router before my present one was great, turned to crap, and then started hating live. I found out though that both the modem and router were actually being surged.

I have the Actiontec Mega Control Router from Verizon FIOS, does anyone else have this? Have you successfully configured it to open NAT?

nevermind I figured it out.

It's worse then NAT issues.... CoD4 keeps saying "Must have active connection to play xbox live or sylink." But that's a new issue.

I read that it's nothing big, just Connection issues with XBL in General, they've been working on the problem all day, If I am correct, this issue has been going on since like 8:30pm last night. First I thought it was Bungie or something since we were all playing H3 at the time but that's not the case. We kinda joked about it blaming Bungie's Departure from it's Nest at Microsoft but it's XBL in general as far as I've been reading.
So Here's a Link just in case this might help those who are still wondering about this issue.
XBL Down ATM (http://kotaku.com/gaming/xbox-live/xbox-live-goes-down-224710.php)
You're not Alone (http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=16092806)
IDK exactly what the deal is, all I do know is that it's supposedly being worked on, Let's hope it's back up soon cause I'd like to enjoy some H3, I myself managed to get into two matches throughout the whole 4-5 hours I was online for LOL, So hey, Better luck tomorrow I guess.
Well... See ya.

Well if you read Kahlo's article then it says its from SOOO many ppl logging onto Xbox Live. Thats EXTREMELY odd. So they are telling me if I log onto the internet its going to stop working cause SOOOO many ppl are on.,.......

Well, if that's the case then we can expect it to be back up soon, the issue's been going on for two days if not nearly 3. I experiemced it at around 6:00pm-7:00pm yesterday and We couldn't play online, We'd be signed in but on the dashboard it shows as if you're not signed in, It's weird.
Keep in mind that 2008 is right around the corner so it might possibly be something to do with that as well but they have not announced any updates as they usually do... At First I was thinking it was Halo 3 but it's not the game, It's XBL acting up, Give it another day or so... Hopefully it's up tomorrow morning, I'd like to play some Halo 3.

to solve all your nat setting the easy way but not the cheapest

get a gaming router or vista compatible on

i personally dont know why routers nat settings differ ( if anyone knows i would love to hear it )

Yeah I used to work for xbox. I was doing both live and hardware issues, so if you have any questions feel free to ask. A lot of the techs over there really don't know what they are doing, but I can guide you in the right direction.

Even if NAT isn't strict or moderate - it still could be effecting your connection. It could barely pass so open the ports on your router firewall

Ports:
UPD 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074

Also make sure to disable UPnP in the router firmware

Failing IP address could be a little tricky sometimes, but most the time resetting your console settings to default, and powercycling the modem solve the problem

you have to reset your router and your xbox wait till the router is connected again and then reconnect the xbox. Then keep trying to test and if it dosent work do the same thing and make sure that your router is is left unplugged for at least 2 mins, then plug back in and try again <33

Okay - so I thought I'd throw this one at the pot, see if it whizzed round the lip a bit before falling in to the middle with a loud 'thwock'

I have 2 xbox360 (and OLD one - pre falcon) and an Elite (for the HD output for use with my New TV).
BOTH exactly same setup, using exactly same wireless network connector, on exactly the same IP (obviously one at a time and not both on together)
NAT on old Xbox360 = Moderate
NAT on Elite 360 = OPEN

So it may be a combination of router AND xbox that can also effect NAT settings. GO FIGURE !!!! :p

Hey Drewman,

The problem is, if you are using NAT, you only have one public IP address (or WAN IP on your cable/dsl/fios side)

So technically, one port can be mapped to one IP. Try this, disable all port forwarding, and enable upnp (which xbox takes advantage of) which stands for "universal plug and play" and try it again.

Hey Sharpay,

As this article states:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/mtu-failed-on-xbox-live-test.html

You will want to set it to the lowest MTU, incrementing until both Xbox live and your Internet works. (try 1369)

Cheers!

sometimes when i play it cant read my ip adderss...

Both your computer (most likely) and router (most likely) use what is called DHCP to "lease" an IP address.

So typically the way you want your network to come up is Cable Modem first, then the router (so the router pulls an IP from the modem) then the Xbox (for which the xbox will pull an IP from the router)

If the router is taking a long time to boot up, let me know what model and maybe we can tweak it.

Cheers!

ok i have rebooted my modem over 5 times and unplugged the ethernet cord from xbox and plugged it in when modem was connected. it suggests that my modem may not be assigning an ip address and it wants me to try a static ip....can someone explain to me how to do this? talk to me like a 5 year old. by the way i dont have a router just a modem.

HELP PLEASE!!! I just upgraded our internet connection with TWC Extreme. We have two xbox's, one is hard line connected and mine is connected by wi-fi. After the upgrade we are now having issues like crazy. At first, both of our NAT's were changed to "Strict" and then when we fixed that, we are now having issues being able to play in a party with anyone else but us. Everytime we do connect to a party with others one of us is signed out of xbox live and then when we try and sign back in it says "XBOX servers are unavailable, please try again later." When we upgraded they made us use their router which is a UBEE. Any suggestions???
