So today, the 15th of November, marks the 5th anniversary for the original Xbox and the 4th anniversay for Xbox Live and I thought I'd whip up a thread where we can take trips down memory lane.

Major Nelson's post on the anniversary (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/15/and-now-we-are-five.aspx)

I still pretty much remember my first experience with the Xbox. A friend of mine bought the console pretty close to it's European launch, and though it didn't impress me with it's design or size. Sweet merciful zombie jesus, what was up with the absurdly large controller? It's nice to see a company that cares for the lumberjacks out there who coudn't get a controller that fit their hands, but fo the rest of us it seems quite excessive.
Anyways! The first game I saw him playing was Dead Or Alive 3, which pretty much blew my mind - the game looked downright amazing, and even though I got my *** kicked, it was still pretty fun.

Then... there was Halo. The game I started drooling over back in '98 when it was supposed to be released for the PC and Mac. But of course, Microsoft bought Bungie, and made Halo an Xbox exclusive. That game made me realize that FPS might just work in consoles after all.

I never did buy an Xbox myself, but several of my friends had so I did spend some time with it, as it didn't really have any must-have exclusives that would justify a purchase, so I stuck with my PC.

Xbox Live introduced itself to me even though I didn't own an Xbox, but mostly because my friend did, and they were playing Halo 2. Oh, goddamn Halo 2. For the first couple of months this game was out, I had a hard time getting a hold of my friends, as anything involving not using the Xbox to communicate with people was unthinkable to them.

Goddamn, my rant is getting too long. Lets hear about your Xbox and Xbox Live memories! :king:

Well, i definitely wouldn't know a thing about this clan or the people in it if I didn't jump on Xbox Live and begin playing Halo 2 like a crazed kid.

Most importantly, I wouldn't have met MuseChick. I'm pretty sure I couldn't imagine that.

I probably wouldn't be playing games anywhere near as much as I do today if it wasn't for Xbox and Xbox Live. I played primarily sports games for quite some time, with the occasional RPG and shooter thrown in. Then Halo 2 came out and I bought an Xbox and signed up for Xbox Live.

Halo 2 would pretty much be the only game I played for a year straight. I am glad I took some time away to play Jade Empire though. I got the Xbox so late that I missed quite a few of the great early titles, but I'm glad I didn't miss Halo 2 and Jade Empire.

I joined a clan over at Geezer Gamers for Halo 2 shortly after Halo 2 came out. I couldn't stand matchmaking, and if it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't have lasted in Halo 2 anywhere near as long as I did. I would end up leaving the clan after my unofficial retirement from Halo 2 after the Xbox 360 came out. The desire to find more people to play with in more than just Halo 2 would lead me here (along with knowing someone that used to play with some people here). Looking back, things are quite different from when it first began. We go from games such as MechAssault to Gears of War (not that MechAssault was bad of course), and just how much the service itself as evolved now that the 360 is out.
