So today, the 15th of November, marks the 5th anniversary for the original Xbox and the 4th anniversay for Xbox Live and I thought I'd whip up a thread where we can take trips down memory lane.
Major Nelson's post on the anniversary (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/15/and-now-we-are-five.aspx)
I still pretty much remember my first experience with the Xbox. A friend of mine bought the console pretty close to it's European launch, and though it didn't impress me with it's design or size. Sweet merciful zombie jesus, what was up with the absurdly large controller? It's nice to see a company that cares for the lumberjacks out there who coudn't get a controller that fit their hands, but fo the rest of us it seems quite excessive.
Anyways! The first game I saw him playing was Dead Or Alive 3, which pretty much blew my mind - the game looked downright amazing, and even though I got my *** kicked, it was still pretty fun.
Then... there was Halo. The game I started drooling over back in '98 when it was supposed to be released for the PC and Mac. But of course, Microsoft bought Bungie, and made Halo an Xbox exclusive. That game made me realize that FPS might just work in consoles after all.
I never did buy an Xbox myself, but several of my friends had so I did spend some time with it, as it didn't really have any must-have exclusives that would justify a purchase, so I stuck with my PC.
Xbox Live introduced itself to me even though I didn't own an Xbox, but mostly because my friend did, and they were playing Halo 2. Oh, goddamn Halo 2. For the first couple of months this game was out, I had a hard time getting a hold of my friends, as anything involving not using the Xbox to communicate with people was unthinkable to them.
Goddamn, my rant is getting too long. Lets hear about your Xbox and Xbox Live memories! :king:
