hey guys and gals i have a 17 inch laptop and it has 2 hard drive bays on it. And im wanting to get one of the new Solid State Drives but i wanna make the SSD my main boot drive but i dont have the installation discs for my computer so my question is. Is there anyway i can copy my 7200rpm drive to my new SSD drive so that i can have my OS run on the faster drive.

You can, in theory, boot with a linux live cd and use the dd command. This however is not for the feibt of hearrt, dd can be very hard to use. A paid for dolutuion would be something akin to norton ghost

hmm i might just break down and get a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and just save the hassle :p

Most laptop brands will let you contact the company and request the setup / installation disc that they used to set up your laptop before you got it. Maybe not most, but I've done this for free with HP, and Acer. If you don't request within a certain time frame, they only charge you something in the $20's for the disc, much cheaper than buying a new copy of W7 ultimate.

Yes, you can create a disk image to the new hdd complete with boot. There are plenty of programs that can do this, Norton Ghost would be one I have used many times. At the same time, I would consider it a perfect excuse to upgrade to Win7 :)

o i have win 7 home now. its a brand new computer but i didnt have the cash for the ssd drive then :( im probably just going to call Dell and see what they will do for me.

Clone it.
If you don't want to go digging around in your system, you can pay most computer shops to do it for you. Also, don't go to best buy or futureshop or wherever. Go to a designated PC shop.
