I'd be more interested to know where the largest chunk of this 64% female population lies. For instance, which game consists the largest female population from the 64%? I'll put my money down and say it's either Ragnarok Online or World of Warcraft, but RO being my first guess.
I read it was stay at home moms. And my mom likes just adventure games. :D

They never specified what an online game was, especially as compared to a video game.
I've read in other studies that more women play cell phone games and web-based games like Yahoo games than men, yet when it comes to true online video games (halo 2, css, graw, etc.) the majority of people playing are men.
I like the end statistic, it'd be nice to see more women playing in general, but I do wonder about the methodology of the study.

Theres still a long ways to go before Women outnumber Men, if it ever happens at all.. I dont know how these guys did their research, but to me I think its too farfetched at this day and age to believe at all.
Well the numbers there say it all:
Of the 117 million active gamers in the U.S., 56 percent play games online.
With a user subscription base of 4 million on xbox live, the definition of 'online games' is really relative - and in my opinion totally inaccurate. Calling someone who plays one of those little flash games in a web page advertisement or other basic online 'games' - callin them 'gamers' is completely and utterly incorrect in my opinion, but i'm sure they included them because its hard to say there are 117 million active gamers otherwise......thats nearly half the population!

Generally surveys are used to collect demographic data. I assume that Nielsen Entertainment collected information based on what online gaming companies know about their customers. If the user checked off their sex as 'male' or 'female,' then that may be one way Nielsen defines the user. It could also be based upon their name, their personal information, or their in-game avatar as well. The very fact that they use a survey creates a confounding variable in itself: the surveyed person may be lying about their sex.
I wouldn't go nuts over this survey unless if there is more information provided.

The validity and reliability of the survey data is questionable. Again, they would have to release the data and the surveys used to obtain this information.

.......
because over 50 million people play ddr......

One survey does not mean a thing, although if a series of surveys show this trend, then that will mean something. At least this survey can be seen in the light that It is impossible to deny that the person who just totally whooped you might possibly be a girl. Unless its some freaky guy pretending to be a girl, damn World of Warcraft.

Considering how many women also play under the assumption they're dudes and don't correct anyone, it's possible.

Well that sounds great that there are more female players out there. And it is a saddening because now there are declining numbers of guys showing interest in gameing. I guess there is a new revolution of gamers out there now. Hopefully they bring a whole new way of gameing to the gameing community.
Finally more skilled players out there to kick my butt. Not that there aren't any already.

First of all this isnt the real numbers becuase its just a survey. And im betting most dudes blow it off instead of wasteing time on a pointless survey.

Lol, QFT.
I think that's pretty much true for almost all games, except for a select few.
Yay for females, even though I think this could a little questionable. It just doesn't sound right, I barely see females on compared to males.

I think we have a balanced number of male gamers and female gamers out there. I just think some female gamers dont make themselves known for gaming. And the gameing community better not decline. Im 15 and i absolutely love games. i got an early start at 7 on the Legends of FPS Doom and Wolfenstein and we have a new wave of gamers coming :). I personally think gaming is getter bigger and better. I just cant wait till we have VR games that are almost lifelike and flawless ***Drools***

i agree there are a lot, but no way more than males. maybe games like cell phone games, or msn games, but not hardcore games. most girls play games because of a male influence, boyfriend, husband, dad, best friend, so i agree there are more and more coming in, but i highly doubt there will ever be more than males.
high five to the ladies for stepping it up and speaking out, and not being afraid to tell people they are gamers
I like the article, but I don't understand why they would title it "Women outnumber men in online games, survey finds" when only the first two paragraphs specify gender. It was basically statistics.
