How bad did it hurt? OOO and be careful with your gums, since those types of piercings tend to thin them out, but I'm sure they told you about how to take care of that and all.

Well if you think about it, it makes sense, it's constantly rubbing up against your gums.

Damn, thats cool lookin. Did it hurt at all? Ive heard stories on both sides, so I dunno.

Actually the metal wears your enamal on your teeth out and tends to chip the enamel so you end up with cavities forming quicker. And since it's in such a weird place it's easy to miss it with your toothbrush. People also tend to switch directions with their toothbrush on their front teeth and tend to miss the same area over and over due to this switching.

I've also seen tounge studs cause fractures in teeth which are not repairable and you have to have the tooth pulled if it gets bad enough. (If any of you have at tounge stud out there and "clack" it on your teeth - BAD idea)
Get a ceramic or plastic backing for the inside of your lip. It'll be easier on your enamal and hurt your gums less.

Your bar should be the right size and shouldn't rub on your gums, if it does you need a shorter one..i wear metal studs in both my lip piercings and they are fine.

Yeah, if your piercer does it, it won't irritate it much, it's better to be a little sore again than have a long bar rubbing against your gums and teeth.

Wait until after it heals to change the jewelry (I used to be a piercer)! It is true the labret post does wear your teeth and gums down, I have had mine in for about 7 years and I found that putting a ring through it keeps it from wearing your tooth enamel and it keeps from painfully rubbing on your gums. (Just make sure you get a small enough ring so it doesnt clack on your teeth);) :love2:

PS: Don't worry as long as you brush well and use mouthwash like listerine (and you don't chew on it of course) your teeth will not fall out or rot or any of that craziness....trust me some of my piercings I have had for over 10 years and I still have never had a cavity or damaged tooth in my life(cuz I am a little **** about that)

Surely it depends on where the piercing is placed? I've had posts in both mine and the backs don't even touch my teeth ^^ I recommend things called Micro labret studs btw, if you wanna wear a stud in it they are smaller.

And just personally i wouldn't wait for it to heal completely before you get it changed if it's rubbing...if it's not then yeah wait lol.

And keep http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Mouthwash That in mind when using mouthwash :)

Awww...I use to have a vertical labret piercing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v124/Tobitha/IMG_1704.jpg
omg i miss it. ):

(don't keep that labret for too long, 2-3 years max. it willl fudge up your gums something fierce, regardless of the metal or plastic OR how well it was placed. it just happens unfortunately :/ )

ACK!

Note of advice.....just DONT USE MOUTHWASH. Ever. Ever, ever, ever.

The single best thing you can do for your piercings (ESPECIALLY oral ones) is to just let them heal naturally, and clean them every night after a shower (be really careful not to get any soap near or on it) with a damp q-tip.

Just leave them alone, your body knows what its doing. (:

I'm absolutly sick of people giving out advice when it's just rubbish....

Mouthwash is FINE if you use a nice gentle one. You should really just clean with saline (salt and water)

And labret piercings are FINE if they are positioned well, it does not just fudge up your gums reguardless. I cant even feel the backs of my labret studs because of the position and I have the right jewellery for it. Please can you actually know what you're talking about before you go giving advice to people on their body and health -.-;

Can I actually know what I'm talking about before giving advice on body & health? Really?

A normal, healthy person should NOT need antiseptics to care for their piercings. Your body's immune system is PERFECTLY capable of preventing infection all on its own. Saline is really just used to increase circulation to the area - bringing more blood more often - which speeds up healing time.

The only time I would ever suggest that somebody use an alcohol-free mouthwash would be if you consumed a lot of tobacco or alcohol....ya know, fight chemicals with chemicals, I guess.

It's stupid to argue over aftercare, because piercing is not be ANY means a medical procedure....there are some very awful, and very amazing piercers out there. You can be a piercer by ordering a certificate online and getting your local Health Organization to OK your business. A lot of people argue over procedure & aftercare, because there is NO way that every piercer agrees on doing things. Why? Because it is all based on trial & error. Some things work for some peircers, and other ways work better for the rest.

Not like it matters, though. You really can do whatever the hell you want to your piercing (with good intentions) and it probably will heal regardless. The art of piercing has been around for CENTURIES, and their oral piercings healed just fine without mouthwash...or, fudge, even toothpaste. (:

I agree with you on that. You get alot of germs in your mouth though, and alcohol free mouthwash is sometimes a good idea :) It's true that your body can fight off things by itself, but your body is not designed to have holes poked in it so giving it some help to heal will result in less hassle and a better piercing.

But still...labret piercings will not mess up your gums every time.

How comes you didn't keep yours? It looked nice :)

I love this conversation that's going on. Can I have some advice though? I'm thinking of getting my septum and sternum done when I'm of age, and I'm wondering if I should know anything before I get it done to minimize pain and help the healing process. I know that it'll be a year and a half before I can get it done, but I've wanted it done for two years now, and I won't be chaning my mind. I know that the sternum is a surface piercing, so how long would I be able to keep it in without the risk of infection? I know I'm asking a lot of questions but some of you seem to know what you're talking about and I trust your information and opinions.

Righttttt...well i've got my septum done, and it was the least painless, just feels like a sharp pinch and makes your eyes water a bit :) so don't worry about that! As for helping it heal, just do salt soaks.

With surface piercings, you need to find a good piercer if you want the best chance of keeping it, find someone who will do it using a surface bar, not just a barbell. And i'd worry more about rejection with the surface piercing than infection. http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Surface_Piercing Read that, and look around that site, it'll really help. x

And for the people asking if it hurt, pain tollerence is different for everyone so if it didn't hurt her it might hurt you and vise versa.

The more painful spots are the spots not typically pierced. Like the anti-brow. The labret piercing is one quick shot straight through, so its minimal pain.

Back to the argument of mouthwash >_>

I got my tongue pierced like... 2-3 years ago... when I did I was given advise to swish with mouthwash after I ate and stuff....

This actualy backfired on me... my tounge got all dried out and my mouth felt funny...

Turns out I was killing all the good stuff in my mouth as well as the bad...

Mouthwash once a day to keep your breath fresh is awsome... but any more then that... and at least for me... it was icky >_<
