Every September through March, in Taiji, Japan, over 23,000 dolphins are led to their horrific deaths by "fishermen" who trap the dolphins in giant nets, drive them into a cove, and stab them until they are dead and the water is stained with their blood. The dolphins killed are used as meat to sell in fish markets, and are disguised as the meat of other sea animals so that they can legally sell the meat. And since dolphin meat contains over 2000 times the acceptable level of mercury, anyone who buys the meat is subjected to debilitating disease. Help end this merciless annual slaughter of creatures that, on many levels, are considered as intelligent as humans.
In the feature documentary "The Cove," a team of activists and filmmakers infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat. The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. Once the Japanese people know we believe they will demand change.
