October 21, 2006
Microsoft Corp. plans to finance a movie based on its popular video game "Halo" after Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox backed out of the project.
The two studios cut their ties to "Halo" because of costs associated with the movie, which had a preliminary budget of $145 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. The studios also failed to persuade the filmmakers to renegotiate their contracts, the newspaper said.
"We are disappointed that Universal wanted to significantly renegotiate the financial points of the deal," Microsoft said in a statement Friday. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the 'Halo' brand." Fox and Universal also had been in a power struggle over the movie's control, the Times said. The studios refused to comment. The movie -- a large production replete with complicated special effects -- is scheduled for a summer 2008 release.

It's defenitely not "cancelled", just because Fox and Universal dropped out, doesnt mean it wont get made. Distributors change throughout a movies production, it happens... with a big name like Halo, there is no way they wont be able to find a distributor.

Glad to see someone stepped back up for it. I knew it was not really cancled, there was no way Microsoft would let their cash-cow flounder like that. Hopefully it will be good

Making a movie about Halo is actually quite the challenge, not only have you got to please the fans of the series, but you'll also have to make it look attractive to people who have never played, or maybe never heard of, the game.
It seems like a bit of risk, but seeing how much crap that sweeps in big money at the box office, this should be a good a bet as anything.

I wont be surprise if this fails the box office. Lot of movies made from games didn't do so well. Then again, they have plans for a MechWarrior movie (Microsoft biggest hit on PC) and Halo being their biggest hit on the Xbox. Pleasing the fans and making it attractive to people who have never played the game is a challenge like GangsterPanda pointed out.

More money for Microsoft I guess.

Maybe Uwe Boll is a guest director?
