HG's Sig Thread

[H2O Gin]

Yoooo!!!

OK so I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and start a little itty bitty sig thread to compete with the bigger ones.

"But HG, why should I pick over anybody else to make my sig?"

2 things:

1. I'm fast, give me a render and any other specifics and it'll be done in alf an hour after i see it.

2. experience, I've been making sigs of all different kinds for about 4 or 5 years now and have a good grasps on a large variety of styles.

Banners and Userbars aren't a problem either.

One last thing I need to stress.

Like the great Niel Gaiman once said:

"Artists always work best with limitations."

if you want one, tell me what you want, but also tell what you don't want. I am resourceful but almost no information is not helpful.

i tried doing that when i started but upon later evaluation, there wasn't much to work with, no "flow" i guess you could say. but letting a little bit of the beast in there I was able to give the render and thus the sig some kind of direction, and you gave me creative freedom so shame on you :P jk jk

every artist is going to have similarities in their work. look at Van Gogh, although he made paintings of different objects and sceneries but the same post-impressionist style remained. I'm not trying to compare myself to Van Gogh in any sense just giving one example of a great artist with a running style in his paintings.

Well, I was thinking since I'm in the StarCraft 2 Division, I want something to reflect that with my favorite characters in the game.
First, the queen of blades, I was thinking maybe having this image on the left side of the sig: http://bit.ly/eqDqDG
and having the StarCraft Terran Medic on the right; http://bit.ly/hVu9Nc
With "H2O REM" in the middle that would blend with the background.

Perhaps maybe have a gradient going from left to right in black --> blue (that matches the medic background)
Sorry if this is too much to ask, haha :D

p.s: oh, and if you can have the medic rotate so she's facing to the left. :D I think that'll make the sig balance out a lot better imo.

I tried to make one but it ended in a massive failure. as far as sites, I haven't looked at a tutorial in 3 years, I just do what I'm familiar with or what I feel like trying.

the one piece of advice I can give though is to experiment. Try everything you possibly can on Photoshop.

it's a simple pattern. I made a 2 px x 2 px transparent canvas, put a black 1 pixel brush in one of the corners, and went to Edit>Define Pattern.

You can use Edit>Fill to apply it :)

I just saw this and yeah, I always liked widescreen borders. It adds a dimension to the sigs that a standard border around the edge can't (and to be honest, the standard borders get dull. I've been experimenting with making sigs with no borders at all but we'll see.)

I really really love my current sig and the only thing that can top it off is my love for dead space. If you can make one with similar dimensions as my current one, that would be nice. Most people forget there are the sig rules too...

smaller sigs are a lot easier to work with and end up having a lot less empty space than bigger ones. I started out with a relatively small size which is why they are as small as they are.

Yea I noticed that a lot of the big ones have empty space, I don't get how you make the backgrounds, I only know how to use the clouds and lens flares and stuff >.< haha

sometimes the best background is a simple gradient or a base color. if you look at a lot of my sigs, that's usually how they start. Another cool trick is to incorporate the render into the background, to actually MAKE it the background, I used to do that but I found it sometimes made the sigs look too wild and sloppy.

I usually have a person off to the side kinda as an avatar I guess, whenever I make somebody elses I always ask them if they have a character they like. I've looked at tutorials and I get so confused halfway into it lmao.

no piece of art is 100% complete. your sig for Momo might not have materialized yet in your head. Basically, don't think of a sig as "this sucks", think of it as a work in progress.

Anyone can make a sig, but it takes some work and dedication to make good sigs. I've had photoshop for about 5 years so I hope that was time well spent.

there are a few programs you can look into using. The two I used in the past have been:

GIMP (freeware but some friends of mine had issues with it, mostly dealing with malware)

and Photoshop (CS2, CS3 beta, CS4, and CS5)

Photoshop CS5 is what I use right now.

the best piece of advice I can give is to take a day or two just messing around on canvas and figuring out what everything does. for most of my sigs, I like to incorporate Adjustment Layers and Filters.

other than that, go wild.

Hm.. Normally, I make my own graphics, but you're good. So, I think I'll request a sig. :P

Ok, here's what I want:

size(wxh): 350x120
Text(any cool font that flows well with the sig): Nova Glow
colors/effects: match the image I give you, make some cool lighting effects for it(surprise me), lots of greens and browns and natural colors.
border: None, unless you think a border would look good with the sig you make
