I just finished reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer. My book club, knowing I didn't care for The Twilight Saga and Stephanie Meyer's romance novels, recommended this book. They assured me this was not a romance novel, but a scifi. Well, the first 350-400 pages were excellent! There was action, suspense, thrills, drama, plot, character development, strong cultivating relationships, love. What a movie it would make! Fantastic!
And then... it happened. After ~ 400 pages later things went downhill fast. Everything I described above went away. And I realize now this book isn't a scifi or drama, it's another romance novel. One of Stephanie Meyer's romance novels. Where the plot is practically nonexistent, the word "melodramatic" does not do her books justice, the dialogue is unintelligent and shallow.
It's interesting how I love the first 2/3 of the book but disliked the rest. It's like two different authors worked on this novel.

I suppose it doesn't help I just got done reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel. He is light years ahead of Stephanie Meter. I probably should give Meyer a break considering I just finished Martel's book. There are many different types of artists. They can't all be Leonardo Davinci's or Yann Martel's. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Don't you feel like kicking yourself with a steel-toe boot for reading a Stephanie Meyer novel that tricked you into thinking it wasn't a Stephanie Meyer novel, and then bashing you in the face with "SURPRISE: Typical Stephanie Meyer Novel"?

I know you said this post was not for Stephanie Meyer fans, but let's be honest. No offense, but does anyone actually LIKE her books?

Also, you bring up a good point. If most of that book was good and then hit you in the face with more of the same old Stephanie Meyer, it DOES beg the question "Is someone else writing her novels for her?" Or is it a trick to get you to keep reading, and when you think you finally found a decent book that isn't like all her others, she finds a way to stick Edward Cullen-esque characters in there.

(For the record, for you youngins out there, VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE WHEN THEY GO OUT IN THE SUN!!! THEY BURST INTO FLAMES AND DISINTEGRATE!!!)

Just so you know...

PS: Sorry about the rant...I'm a little wound up right now.

I read it...kind of. I started reading it and had to put it down because I was getting bored, then I liked the middle enough that it kept me going...and then I wanted to know how it ended so I finished it...I think...I might have skipped a few pages er chapters? I'm not sure lol...I do know that I skimmed ALOT...The thing I liked most about the book was the relationship between Melanie and Wanderer...but that was about it.

I actually didn't mind her Twilight books, not my favorite author or anything. I hate what it's turned into now days and I love to joke about the characters lol

Like I found a shirt at Jinx it reads: "...And then Buffy staked Edward. The End." and thought it was hilarious lol.

People like her books. I think they are romance novel readers. Like I said, I like romance stories with in books/movies, but not romance books/movies. There usually isn't enough plot.

LOLOLOLOL That is really fun!

I like the relationship between Melanie and Wander too. It was very interesting to watch Melonie slowly come out of her shell, discovering what type of person she is. I liked the way the flash backs would slowly come into Wander's conscience, finding out who this woman was who's body she now inhabits, what was she like, who were these people in her past.
Then there were these alien invaders, how they came about, how can the humans and Wander avoid capture, how can they avoid he Seeker, how can they stop the aliens from committing total genocide of the human race? A good plot moving right along. It's to bad the plot stopped and it turned into a stupid love triangle.
I was reading an interview by Stephanie Meyer and she said her idea for the book came from her imagining a love triangle where an alien inhabits a human's body, and then one man loves the human and the other man loves the alien. So you see, Meyer literally wrote the first 350-400 pages for the love story. It's not about the alien invader plot. She deceived us all.

I read Twilight because I wanted to check out all the fuss, but my brain wouldn't have survived a continuation into the rest of the series. Badly written, i-just-threw-up-in-my-mouth teenage romance (and for the record, I say this having read several Nicholas Sparks books which are the definition of fluffy, not so well written romance).

However, The Host is actually a much more interesting and better written (not well written) story. I don't understand why it gets so much less fan attention. It does lather on the teenage angst/romance, but is more intertwined with a solid plot. If I had to recommend one Stephanie Meyer book on threat of death, I'd immediately point to The Host. That said, The Host is just over 600 pages. It would've been a much better book cut down by at least 250 pages. (not just the last 200 pages). Where was her editor?!

and that is the last semi-passionate paragraph i will ever write about Stephanie Meyer or her products.

I never went into Twilight thinking I would LOVE her writing. She is not a very good writer. However, I do love her stories. I'm usually not into romance novels but the Twilight Series was awesome. I love it!

I love the different more humanistic spin that was given to vampires in this series.

I just started reading The Host and it is pretty good so far. :) I hope I enjoy the last 100 pages or so! :) I appreciate the review on it and now I truly do hope the ending turns out to be something I enjoy! Lol!

I tried to read "The Host" but have failed. I just can't get into it. I think it's her writing style in it. I read all the Twilight series and am a fan of the story but her writing and Bella just makes me want to slap her for being such a whiny brat.
I hated the Twilight movie but am highly impressed with the other two movies. It's strange that I'm Team Edward in the books but Team Jacob in the movies... definitely shows you how the writing can do that to people.
