iPod Touch official upgrade?

A friend of a friend recently told me that you could upgrade your old ipod when a newer model came out for no cost, as long as you had all the original sales related stuff. I am beginning to think he is a liar. I've spent awhile on the apple sites and it just keeps looping me around to the same pages, that don't have the info I need.

Can you upgrade an old ipod for a new one, and how do you do it? I am going crazy trying to figure this out! Thanks

No, you can't do that. The only way I was able to do that with my Zune, was when my 1st Gen 30Gig just stopped working, I got a 120GB for free since I bought the extended protection plan.
