Something that has been changing in recent years.
In terms of sheer number of games, with such a rich console history, I would have to say there are more readily published console games, but if you include a lot of smaller PC games they'd def take the lead.

That will be the stupidest thing they ever do.
I can see it now...They cross platform a game>Within the first month some of the PC gamers have created hacks for the game>the game fails miserably>cross platform gaming is never heard about again.

Console games is gettin more members now than before. Look at Xbox Live and PS2 Online.
Yeah console has a LOT of players, and pc doesn't, so I think console is more popular.

PC doesn't? pc has had the highest amount of gamers before consoles even came close to hitting it big. and the first competitive games were pc. PC has an insane amount of people. i dont think consoles are even close to the amount of pc gamers.

I think theres more casual gamers on the console, but when it comes to professional play, the PC currently has a bigger market.
However, with MLG growing fast, who knows. During CGI I know that consoles seemed to get a large margine of airtime, and at MLG, its basically console only. WCG also has a lot of console backing.
While PC is bigger, though, if the PC wants to stay on top they'll need to get on the same page.. meaning, no splitting between Q3 and Q4, CS and CS:S, Starcraft and Wc3, etc. Not to say they have to pick 1 game and 1 game only, just that there needs to be a general consensus between all the major leagues on what they want and what they dont want, rather then splitting the community up.

Actually that is going to happen, they are actually going to cross-platform games that what bill gates was talking about in E3. PC competitions and anti-cheat software have matured really well.

only thing that sucks about cross platform is that pc will always have an advantage over consoles. i remember playing quake 3 on dreamcast against pc players, in order for it to be decent microsoft would have to release mouse and keyboard or atleast make the usb keyboards/mouse work in game, because due to experience on DC i got owned with a joypad...but then i bought a mouse and keyboard and it was pretty much even after that except for fps. But if microsoft did make that move, it would anger alot of players, so im not to sure how thats going to work. ahh quake 3 days....fun times :P

speaking of q3 on the dreamcast.. talk about a failure of a cross-platform PC/Console game :P. Those who dont know the story, idsoftware patched Q3 on the PC and it was no longer cross platform because both games had different versions :P.

no. but ff is completely different than an fps game. pc will always have an advantage in that genera, like ninja said, only way it might work if the 360 usb supported mouse and keyboard. and the majority of hardcore games that would most likely be cross-platformed would be fps'
i do think it would work maybe with mmo's. but otherwise, i'm not sure.

360 supports a keyboard. But face it, Bill Gates said it, xbox live isn't going to be xbox live anymore but live anywhere and your going to see games crossed platform. Maybe Halo2 for vista systems.

PC players would still have an advantage with hardware. Plus there's cheats/hacks for pretty much every PC game because it's so easy to do. If you get cross platform gaming, then you bring the people that have access to and/or use cheats onto xbox live.
It's a really bad idea IMHO.

This is hard to say.
Before HD, I think consoles were more of a niche market. They were geared toward a certain type of game and player.
With the introduction of higher game resolutions and HD consoles are going to gain more popularity and exposure. (along with the opening of the platforms to various experiences; new interactive interface, TV content, Movie content, Downloadables.. etc)
As far as general appeal, nothing will ever touch what the PC. The PC is a general purpose device and can appeal to many different types of gamers. If you take into consideration hardcore gamers, compeditive gamers, children gamers, people who play online poker, yahoo! games etc etc. I think you would find PC gaming (both in terms of people participating and games out there) outnumber the entire history of console gaming by a very significant margin.
They both suit a purpose. I find I am enjoying console gaming more, where I used to be a hardcore PC gamer. Simply for the fact that I can lounge on my couch and enjoy a game as a recreational activity (that I do very often I might add) instead of feeling confined, restricted and possibly stressed behind a computer.

Really doesn't matter about cheats using a pc or what not, still you got cheaters for both console and pc. There is nothing you can do to change that. Yet might be an excellent way to bridge the gap from having xbox live to use actual game servers instead using one person on a console as host.
It's so much easier to cheat on PCs than Consoles. PC requires coded programs where as consoles you have to actually physically change something first.
In terms of sheer numbers of users the PC dominates. Figure in all the MMOs, and it's a landslide. 5-6million players for World of Warcraft alone. CS 1.6 is probably still one of the most played online shooters to date, then you figure in all the people who play games like Warcraft 3, Starcraft (still), Civ4, etc. It will be a long time before consoles take over the market IMO.
Think of it this way just looking at our community; everyone on the forums has a PC, not everyone has a Console system.
edit:
Oh and PC vs Console on a cross platformed MMO would be a joke. If I *EVER* caught a console user in WoW I would laugh my *** off. Too much customization available to pc users. I have half my keyboard bound to spells/macros for WoW.

They already have MMOs cross platformed with consoles heard of Phantasy Star Online: Universe? Playstation and PC users share the same servers as for the 360 they don't

I'm a hardcore gamer on the 360, casual (very casual as in hardly ever) on the PC.
I've been this way since I started gaming about 14 years ago, and its the way i'll stay, period.
With the exception of a few PC games:-
Halo, GunZ, Delta Force, SWAT4 and GW:F
Those are the only PC games i've considered worth spending time online with, and since I got my 360 i've hardly touched any of them.

That's a pretty easy question, its PC gamers.
Statistically China and Korea for the sheer love of MMORPG makes up for most of the PC userbase in the world, then not forgetting other parts of the world that also play PC games say USA, Canada, Europe, Other parts of Asia it all adds up.
I used to be a PC gamer but there are imo far more games on games consoles than on PC with larger variety of games.

i think it depends where you are and what demographic your speaking of. more teens and adults who call themselves gamers are pc gamers. pc gaming is like and addictive drug, once you give someone a go on your pc, theyre hooked.
America is obviously console dominated, but elsewhere, thats another story.

This is odd to see so many console freaks make them self’s feel good saying that consoles will do this and that and have better games than the PC and are better than the PC but because the PC was here first or that the PC has a lot of asian playing on it that is why PC is just over rated... But most if not all that is so inaccurate or untrue and bias that I just cant stand to read this post any more.
Over 7 mill people play WoW alone. Over 15 mill users logon to pogo. Even though more Console games are sold than PC games in the world. Consoles are only a majority in one country and that is not the US. Its Japan. In Japan the #1 console is the Nintendo DS. Just look at the sales numbers Nintendo puts out every Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 and you can see it for your self. Microsoft hides the numbers so I cant find them and Sony stopped posting them last year. And I was getting lazy and just did not do more then a google search. Some one has pointed out that PC games do last longer too because of patches updated free content and all around more in depht games. Reference at http://www.geek.com/newsbeta2/geeknews/2002Sep/bga20020925016489.htm
I am a PC gamer. Not because consoles does not have good games. Not because I just hate like consoles. But it is because I love MMOs and FPS games. Try playing lets say Halo on the X box vs Halo on PC. Yes its bugged and ****ty because Microsoft wont update or support Halo for PC… but anyway. The X box play will get OWNED. Not just because the hardware or the lack of mouse and keyboard. Its because of the type of gamer that is on the x box compared to PC.
Your playing games that imo need 40+ FPS to look nice. But a TV can’t do more than 28FPS. So, the games blur the screens together to give the feel of 30ish FPS. And they look ok. Play any FPS on a good computer and you will see what I mean. I play FEAR and BF 2142 on computer with all the graphics to high and I love my 60ish FPS. Try getting that kind of graphics out of a console... And then the controller... I would give my right arm for a keyboard and mouse for the console. and I still cant believe people say controller is better.
Cheating being easy on PC? you got to be joking... there is more than enough PC software and ways to make games so cheating is impossible for online play. And in most PC games less than 5% of the players cheat online. But console has really no software or ways of making games to stop people from cheating. When you buy a PC game that is online you don’t get the whole game or even the info in the game to work offline the way it does online. But console games have to have all the game that works the same on and offline. So you have much more info and easy ways to get it. With console games you have to download your user data into the mem cards even the items stats and so on your char has is in there. Editing that data is much easier then hacking into the server you play your PC game on. And it would be heard to edit that info for the online PC games server you hacked into that is monitored all the time. You could edit some files on your PC and use bots but there are server programs to pick that up such as punk buster. But console has nothing even close to that. Here is a good example of what I mean. In halo 2 ( what ever it is ) is there ways to ban people from playing that game online if you cheat? no not really... In Counter strike is there a way to stop people from playing on that connection and with that key if they bot or cheat? hell yes. and there are many programs in the game and on server side to make that an option.
And last I hate consoles. It is because they cost as much as a computer. And because the games cost 60+ and you don’t get to download new content to them for free. And yes because you cant use a keyboard and mouse. When you buy a console you are paying the console company. And then when you buy a game for that console your paying that console company. And even though you have internet you need to buy even more services from that console company to play. And then you need to pay even more to download content that would be free for PC gamers to update the games that where buggy to begin with ( oblivion is one of those games ). I just don’t like paying a lot for something I get almost free and cheaper on the PC. I can buy a PC for 600 get an amazing video card for 200 and then by about 10 games for less than 500... But for a console I pay 400 for it then 200 for online then for 10 games that is over 700... This is also why I own a game cube. Its cheap good and fun and the games are like 20 or less...

Depends on the TV and what HD are you running on. 1080i does run only 29.97 FPS but progressive 1080p runs 60. Same goes with 480p and 480i which interlaced your getting lower frame rates.

IMO i would say PC gamers since it was here first they never went down in people just up. I would agree more casual people have consoles due to the fact they worried that the pc games wont work on their pc or they dont understand how it works. I myself started out playing consoles until diablo 2 and everquest came out then i switched lol. But in popularity pc gamers would win due to all the MMOs out for the PC not just WOW which definitly has millions but their is FFXI, EVE, Guildwars, Everquest 2, etc...
For pricing after seeing these new systems up to 400 - 700 dollars i would say its around the same i could build any of u a pc that costs probably about 500 or 600 dollars that could almost run anything. Yet u can always upgrade off ur pc which is a plus.
For graphic wise their is no contest PC games will always have better graphics since you can always upgrade ur Vid Card, Processors, and RAM. Maybe in the future when Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo might make a new console that will beat a pc but not today.
Oh btw this is just a opinion of the 360 which i still love but they say its the next generation of gaming well i would never exspect the next generation of gaming to be in 30 - 40 FPS gotta love my 60 - 80 FPS on my pc :)
I would of brought down the ps3 if i knew the framerates yet i think the ps3 actually runs at a solid 60 fps but im not sure on that lol.

I think the question is flawed flat out. I believe in the enviroment you are refering to are competetive gamers seeing as PMS and h2O are generally competetive gamers. I think that there may be some equality in console vs pc gamers i play PC comepetetivly I play my console (ps2) for fun so technically i am both to the standards of your question however in truth I am a pc gamer. I think in terms of competetiveness in every aspect pc wins hands down for competetive play. I think however games being geared twords there multiplayer capabilities will change the way console gaming is seen, cs:source was released only as a multiplayer game things like this for the console will make huge steps in the competetive console community. I will not lie i was shocked when I saw that console games would be at the CPL, while I see its potential, it will take a lot of work and dedication to make console gaming into what pc gaming is today. Lets face it almost every team in the rainbow six tourny was a PC gamer looking to play something else for fun. Not to put down competetive console gaming in any way but it will need to be stepped up, to ever possibly, be compared competetivly to pc gaming. Just my two cents I dont have a pulse on console gaming I may be entirely misinformed.
