I've watched the trailers and I still don't know what to think about this one....I love FF7, but this could be a horrible game trying to capitalize off of the name....but it could be freakin sweet too.

i'm the same. i've read the reviews and seen some screen shots, but still am puzzled. Is this a devil may cry take off? or the next big thing for FF7. Advent children was sweet hopefully this game continues the fad for FF7.

I played it at E3. I didn't like it. It's not a very kinetic shooter, the controls felt stiff, and combat was basically lining up and shooting bad guys that do little to avoid having their faces shot.

The E3 demo took place in some random alleys in Midgar. I lost patience before I got to the boss character so I was never entirely sure what the objective was.

I was looking forward to it, but now I'm not.

Fair enough. The difference, though, is that the infamous low-frame Halo demo was a year or so before the final game shipped.

Dirge has been out in Japan since January. ;)

Vincent controls like a blimp...not a person. I guess you can change the settings...but still... I saw the 1up Show that covered the game, and they had some interesting comments.

Meh... Beat it in one day. No FF game should be this short regardless of the genre. The game was very 1 dimensional as all you do is swap parts and upgrade pieces to your gun. IE far targets you switch out your pistol for the rifle stock, long barrel and sniper scope. Materia in this game is nothing but an additional feature of your sidearm. It's an average shooter at BEST, the only thing it has going for it is you get the story behind Vincent. There are some things that didn't make sense such as Cloud fighting Rosso (a boss) and then later you fight her... AND talk to Cloud after (wtf!? Learn2killbossesCloud).

I guess Square Enix has to do what it must to survive in an industry that has walked away from the traditional RPG. Mass marketing must go the way of Shooter, MMO, Sport, Sim.

I heard it wasnt too great of a game... However I dont think its so much a lack of returns in the RPG market as it is square trying to net more profit. (hey, everyone needs to make a buck.) There is certainly no other genre that is more popular over in Japan, and there is a solid fan base here in the states and in europe.

The industry trend seems to follow a lull pattern though since development cycles can be so lengthy on any game thats worth while, and I believe we are in a lul, which only means we'll see a peak in a year or so. I predict that will happen with some of the first RPG releases on Ps3 along with Lost Oddessey for 360 etc etc.

However, industry trends aside, Square-enix is starting to stagnate by sticking to the same IP and wringing the life out of it. They have 3 major franchises, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. For a company of their size, those three may not be enough to keep a good enough revenue stream in the eyes of the money lenders/investors. As a result of the IP stagnation coupled with corporate pressures, Its only normal to find an increase in releases based on those IP (hoping a name will drive sales.. etc etc..) and a bunch of mediocre games inbetween the really great ones.

At least thats my opinion on the whole matter.

It's not only that. Kids want things that are faster paced, hands on exciting. Thus the popularity in online multiplayer games. The people who still buy the old turn based RPGs are those who have been fans to the genre for a long time. With such compeition from all other genres of gaming, Square Enix is having to look outside of the box for new blood to buy their games.

I agree Asphix there's always been a lull period in the RPG market, however in prior "lulls" there wasn't this big of a swing in the market toawrds the ever growing online population.
