Only in japan, and take a look at the actual numbers.....purportedly of the 100,000 80% + will be the high end system, which isn't getting a price drop. This is more a press gain than anything

Not to mention the premium system in Japan will hit retailers with an open price. The premium 60GB version will most likely retail for a relative $1,000 in yen.. or more likely much higher. Sony cant back out of that promise now without pissing off a lot of the retailers in that nation.. thus why I think the price drop was done out of necessity rather than logical sense.

This way the Japanese consumer doesnt shun the system (as much anyway) in light of being royaly screwed, yet Sony can maintain a friendly relation with Japanese retail outlets.

I'm surprised I havnt heard more about the open pricing. If I were living in Japan I would be royally pissed off. At least in other territories you can wait in line 36+ hours prior to launch for a chance to get one at a decent price.. in Japan your screwed no matter what you do.
