The gaming press is aflutter with reports that's Gran Turismo HD for the PS3 will test the outer limits of micro-transactions.
The story, as reported by 1up.com via Famitsu, is that GT-HD will come in two versions: Grand Turismo Basic and Grand Turismo Premium.
Get this: While the "Premium" version will ship with 30 cars and 2 tracks, "Basic" will ship with no cars and no tracks. You'll need to purchase and download the autos and roads to do anything more than look at the pretty menus.
Whaaaaaa?
Given the cost of the 750 cars ($.43 to $.85) and the cost of the 50 tracks ($1.71-$4.26), complete copy of the game will cost gamers somewhere between $426.50 and $975, on top of what the actual program costs.
While lots of folks are getting in a twist over this astonishing price-point, I'd hold off on the anger just yet: This hasn't been confirmed, and I'll go out on a limb and predict that someone in the huge game of telephone that is the internet got their facts wrong, and then other people starting getting loud and indignate without the real story.
I mean, there's no way Sony could expect people to pay for the idea of playing a racing game, right?
