My high is what you see in the leaderboard. I actually haven't played much in quite a while. Been spending my time elsewhere. The quest for gamerscore has eclipsed my leaderboard climbing in GW.

I watched it too, but there is way more to it that than moving and shooting. So far i've found you have to split your focus equally between aiming and dodging.

Just keep pluggin' away at it. I was stuck at 300,000 for like a month then one day somehow I got 700,000 something so... yeah. :D

On Shoagie's urgings, I have come over to give whatever help I can in the Geometry Wars area.

For those of you not familiar with me, I'm Wintermute (aka Wintermuteprime) from ILSI. We're a less-competitve clan, and prefer just having good times over pwning n998s or whatever the slang is for now. I've been on good relations with QnD, DBZ and a few other bigger clans. Mostly I was into Unreal Championship, and that was where I met up with Ms. Freyja and the twins. (Hello to all three, by the way!)

Anyways, Shoagie asked if I'd come over and give any advice I could to help with some of the troubles in Geometry Wars. This will get a little long, but I'll give you what I've found to be the most effective.

Firstly, Retro and Evolved are 2 different animals. As of now, I'm #1 in Retro, but only like #31 or 33 in Evolved...so my skills are more toward Retro than the newer game. Here's some of the terms that I'll use a lot:

Circle-spawn
A circle-spawn is when you're doing your everyday thing, and then you're suddenly surrounded by a sphere of enemies which will begin to close in on you. These are very easy to deal with, and I'll get on them later.

4-corner spawn
This is when a whole slew of the same type of creatures roll out of the 4-corners, all toward the middle, and angle toward you.

Random spawn/Chaos
This is the everyday crap that spawns randomly all around the board. The in-between time of the other spawns.

Okay...now....here's the deal. The game has 5 (or 10, depending on how you look at it) difficulty levels. These levels always start off at 0 when you start playing, then increase based on your score, times died and bombs used. The number of 4-corner and circle spawns you get will up the difficulty whether you finish them or not. If a 4-corner spawn STARTS, and you die before it's finished, the remaining creatures will pour out after you respawn.

The difficulty levels are basically -
1 - when you start. Blue Diamond 4-corner spawns will only be blue diamonds. You'll notice that some are slower and some are faster...indicating you're close to levelling the difficulty up.
2- After 10K points. Blue-Diamond 4-corner spawns will also include Green Squares.
3- Around 100K. Blue-Diamond 4-corner spawns will also include Pink Squares.
4 - Around 1 mil. Nothing really different here, except all 4-corner spawns will be longer and deadlier. Jack Spawns will also include all creatures.
5 - When Red Magnets spawn in the middle of the screen. This is approx 2 mill - 3 mil.

There are 'walls' in the game score-wise. You ever notice that you're dying around the same point? The game gets harder at certain barriers. Like 10K, 100K, 1 mil and the biggest around 5 mil. The 5 mil barrier is the 'noob' barrier, and it regularly screws me without KY Jelly.

Okay...now....1 other thing to know: Snake spawns...when you're against the wall , and a snake spawn happens, you die instantly. Unlike other spawns, this is unavoidable, and it's a BUG in the game that has been acknowledged by the makers of the game...so I would strongly encourage avoiding the wall.

Okay....now...lastly...there's 2 ways to fly. Clockwise, and counter-clockwise. I prefer CCW....because I get better success that way...but FLY WHICHEVER WAY works best for you. Don't fight that trend. It's important to get into the groove.

Something to listen for when you're playing. When the chaos is spawning all around you, and you're flying around, shooting and dodging, listen for a split-second of SILENCE...because that means that all the spawning has stopped...when that happens, you're either about to get a 4-corner spawn, or a circle spawn. Keep that in mind, and stay away from the walls and the corners. This gives you a chance at that time to see what's coming out, and plan accordingly.

A basic rule of thumb is to always shoot where you're going, AND, to wiggle your shot slightly. This helps clear the path in front more effectively, and give you room for slight turns in a hurry if you're faced by red magnets swerving in. Typically, just fly in the circle and maul whatever's in front of you.


After you successfully survive (without bombing) a 4-corner spawn or a circle spawn, you'll get a short reprieve of no new spawns...which will let you clean up what's behind you. NEVER shoot behind until you're sure the path in front is clear. And watch for greens. Damn greens.

SURVIVING 4-CORNER SPAWNS:
Depending on what it is, you're pretty well set on 4-corner spawns. For blue's, just chop around in a circle, and polish off the rest when the spawn ends. For green, the same. Keep shooting in front and they won't get you. For pinks...you dive to a side, shooting at the corner you want to move to...trying to clear it out. For later level pinks....good luck. :) For snake, try and stay alive in the middle, shooting toward a cluster....right when time's up, dive above/below the cluster you've weakend, and you should be able to make it past. For jacks...early on, it's a question of spraying your way through. You can dive RIGHT AT a corner, and spray effectively enough to get around it, and keep circling..but later on, the Magnets will come, and they require pinpoint bombing and side movements to avoid. Black hole spawns are easy at first....shoot toward the corner, kill everything, and circle around destroying the black holes, while randomly spraying behind you. For the later ones that include magnets, dive straight to the top or bottom, and activate a black hole to suck in some of the magnets....and spary behind now and then to keep bad things off your back. (You'll see.)

SURVIVING A CIRCLE SPAWN:
Pick a direction and go. Once you pick the direction, do not deviate. You can get through everything except Snake spawns that way. Snakes should involve lingering in the center as long as possible, spraying a direction you want to go, before finally plunging out...or bombing. Points matter, big-time, obviously.

Overall Strat:
Circle.
Always bomb in a bad situation. As time goes on, you'll be able to fight your way out of more...but don't forget to bomb as need be. There's nothing worse than dying out with 6 bombs left...ya know? It just makes you slap your head.

For RETRO:
Just do the circle, and make sure that for every two or three shots forward, you shoot back. In Retro, the creatures WILL catch you, because they move so fast. In Evolved, you can last for about a minute before they do. You're okay until then.

Woot, beat my score by 100 pts... but thats not why im posting. I was over at the xbox.com forums and saw this (http://forums.xbox.com/4613247/ShowPost.aspx). I think its a must see for anyone who wants to improve their game, but beware its like an hour long... I only watched parts of it, but it shows a pretty good technique for taking on lv. 10 spawns.

BTW, "level 10" is the most intense thing ever!

It's basically the hardest point in the game that can happen anywhere from around 1.8 million up to 3+ million. Those red clones spawn all over the board, spawns of hundreds of different enemies come swarming out of the four corners, it's so intense!

You'll know when you get there.

I got my first "lv. 10" at 1.5 million... INSANE. I had a huge jack spawn, about 15-20 of the red magnet guys, a crap load of the pink dealies and some snakes mixed in too... All I need is the survive 1,000,000 too, I almost got it once... 970,000... F***ing snake glitch.

Whenever an enemy spawns there is a small window of time where the enemy can neither kill you, nor you it... except of course snakes. While a snake spawns, it can instantly kill you (while it is spawning) but you cant kill it... It's a glitch that the creators of the game have acknowledged, and we just have to deal with.

The snake spawn glitch usually happens when you're close to the walls (to kind of stop you from wall riding), so a lot of it depends on your timing and whatnot.

I got to 987 400 before dying, now I seem to be getting worse and worse. Time for a break!

Hahah, exactly the same as me, except take out the getting to 2 000 000 in the same game. First I would rarely survive 500 000, then it got down to surviving 100 000. It's really depressing!

1,421,885 - Wow, this game is getting alot funner now that I'm getting a little decent. I had a x9 after destroying 3 sets of jacks in a row.... Heart pumping! Also got the 9bomb achievement.

Sad part is - I still don't have the Survive 500,000 achievement O_O

EDIT: Worst part was... I had 5 bombs left :'(

Man, i've got like only 4 of the atchivements, the highest i have ever gotten was like 2mil, i hope they make more arcade games such as pac man or tec tac toe, or chess, etc the list goes on and the more games the more money to blow, hahahaha, well it is a fun game 8/10 i would give it. but i have to say the hardest part for me in it is with all of those colors i can't see where the targets are and then bang... im dead. other then that its cool.

The last couple of games I played, I ended up restarting b/c I couldent survive a mill. so I havent even finished a game in like a day... And as for breaks, I agree, I tend to do better after a day or so of not playing.
