ok so there is this girl i know who's been getting harrassed on AIM. on 2 occasions, that's it. by 2 different people (sn's). she has instead of telling them to knock it off, has decided to hire a civil attourney to prosecute for hacking software (?), assault, and harassment. seriously? it's the internet. if anyone truthfully can tell me how far she could go with that... please do. like do computers track AIM convos w/out a keylogger? if she has the sn's, can they do IP searches just off those? someone help here.. i mean, for god sakes, there is a 'block' button for a reason, right?... i duno, someone please answer..

well, if she feels that harrased to the point that she wants to go legal, led it be. im just saying that its gonna be costly and it isnt worth it to me. but pride comes at no cost i guess

well yes, but that's not what i'm asking.... like how far will the legal system go for 2 random screen names screwin w/ somone, ya know? like what LEGALLY can they do? i know there are laws against harassment online, but i think it has to be over one time for each screen name, and i think she has to say 'leave me alone'

Its very tough to go a legal route with something like that, not impossible, but difficult. Should she be able to go through the courts, she can probably get an IP address from AOL, and then tehcnically might be able to get the user from the ISP, but as i said its very tough, nearly impossible even to do successfully.

see with aim, you can sign up anywhere with internet, and sign on anywhere with internet. my s/n on aim has like 6 different computers i signed on too. so it'll be "tough" the ISP will be hard to find

rip, i <3 you :) i duno. but even can't you change your IP adress? and even then can't you give false info for registering your sn? it just seems a bit extreme. the reason i ask is they are tryin to pin it on me. i didn't do it, but we have some beef between us, so i can see that i'm the easy subject. she said 'she knows who it is, she just has to prove that all the names are the same person, on the same computer. and they have a case'.. ok??? well obviously it's not me.. so where would they go from there? wasted money and a dropped case?

just fully unplug your modem and then plug it back in. meaning, take out every plug on your modem, wait about a minute, and put it all back. that should give you a new IP.

Depends on how your ISP works whether you'll have a dynamic IP address, but yea for the most part it'll work.
