I was wondering if there was any way of telling if a computer is PCI express compatible.

Also is there a way to convert an AGP port to PCI express via a converter (kinda like the ones you used to use to use your normal headphones on a stereo with the huge headphone plugs)?

There is no way to convert AGP to PCI-E you will have to get a new motherboard for that. To check if you have agp you can either tell us what you have as hardware specs or if this a OEM computer (bought from a store i.e. Dell) the computer manufacture and model number. You can also open the case up and check to see if you have one of these on your board.

I have an AMD Athlon XP (3000+) (I know it's probably time for an upgrade).

Last night after posting this I found information on a company that makes an adapter for PCI-E cards to fit in AGP slots. However, it only works with certain cards and you get a 10% preformance hit.

Either that, or upgrade your computer :p

Your getting more than 10% hit because the is no way AGP can get the bandwidth that a PCI-E will get. There are still really decent cards still out for AGP, if you want recommendations I will be happy to provide.

I was looking into the Geforce 6800 or 6600. I found a couple APG versions of them, but they are more expensive then the PCI-E counterparts.

I have/must upgrade my processor and motherboard in the near future. I'm just undecided on what to upgrade to, and where to get said upgrade. I'd have to up grade to a MB with the processor already installed because there's no way I'm installing one of those again.

Well..
Newegg.com is best for that kind of stuff..

Personally, i would recommend nVidia

Well with the 939 pin boards are really easy to install just lightly push on it and lock the pin down. With newegg.com it is where I buy my stuff.

As we all know, computer parts becomes cheap (and "old") fast, so you can probably get better performance by simply holding it all off 'till you saved up enough cash to buy every component at the same time.

True, it's what I hate about PC gaming. right now I'm wanting to upgrade so get the most out of Battlefield 2. I played on my cousin's computer, and the only difference between his computer and mine is he's got a geforce 6600 and I've got Geforce 5500. You might not think that graphics don't change much, but they do. He has an easier task of making out targets at a distance and picking them off, while mine at either in fog or look like little blurry clumps of dirt.

I'd want to upgrade to a 72 something or other, but I don't think they make them in AGP versions.

They have AGP that go up to 7800 video cards.

If you have a RAID controller on your motherboard another cheap easy upgrade and a nice speed boost would be to get to hard drives and put them together for a RAID 0 setup. After pairing two of my hard drives up I got another 1000 points in 3d mark results

Woo found this on Ebay!

EVGA GeForce 7600GS AGP (http://cgi.ebay.com/EVGA-GeForce-7600GS-AGP_W0QQitemZ300027308382QQihZ020QQcategoryZ40161Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

If you have a check card or a credit card it will pull money from there and transfer it to the other guys account.

I don't, which is why I pay by e-check.
