THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.
It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
You could argue that he was asking for it, but he was good at his job regardless.

If your mother died, and you were mourning her loss and someone came in and said "I don't care." I bet you'd be offended/insulted/and royally pissed off.
I'd expect a 19 year old to know better.

Dude that is just wrong, a person died and didn't deserve it. Would you like no one to mourn of your death when you are gone and just say you are just another figure to the records?

I just seen this on the news. Who'd of thought a stingray would be his downfall after messing about with 20ft crocs. His programs were interesting and informative but it was always a case where something had to happen one day. Bit of a shame.

Yeah, I know I feel bad for them. Kinda sad since he made an impact with his shows and such, maybe not always in the best sense, but it was there
I used to watch his show sometimes also. What a shame at age 44. He was punctured in the heart by a poisonous sting ray. Doing a documentary on Oceans Deadliest in Australia.

Steve Irwin taught all of us who watched him charge crocs, sharks, snakes and other animals, that nature is perfect and so interesting. But it felt sometimes that he did not keep his distance. There's is a distance and respect we must always have when dealing with wild animals. Most of the cases where humans are harmed or killed by wild animals are beacuse that boundry wasn't kept and the animal, acting with that instinct of survival that all animals have, reacted and striked. In this case the Crocodile Hunter was that victim, and a total shame cause he left a young widow with two young boys. In my opinion he could of kept hes distance, and have been more respectful.
RIP Croc Hunter.

I've heard that Irwin recently said that he hoped that when he died, it would be while doing his job, and he hoped it would also be caught on film. Both ended up happening.
He really did love his job, and wildlife in general. I'm sure he loved his family even more, which makes him a good guy in my book. He will be missed.

steve irwin was sometimes cruel to his animals, in the fact that he didn't leave them alone. but he was also a great person, who loved animals, and i believe truthfully wouldn't do anything to have hurt them permanently. so, he will be missed :)

he was a professional.. you are not... please keep your distance from stupidity....
he wasn't killed by a viscous, agressive dangerous animal... infact the stingray is a placid animal that attacks only when felt thretened... the police have reviewed the video and poeple who saw the vid have said it is very hard to watch.. but all steve did was swim above the sting ray....
the irony is he wasnt doing anything dangerous when he was killed...

I used to watch his shows, and have to admit that I thought he was sycotic. After a couple episodes I was hooked. His crazy ways of dealin with crocs and other wild animals were crazy. I thought he would be around forever or atleast until my kids could watch his wild ways. This is truely a shock and I too thought that he would die tackling some huge 2 ton croc that had envaded some lake or somethin. He will be forever remembered and love.

Personally he died as a hero and legend, he took chances in life.. you got to do that, otherwise where do you end up...doing exactly the same thing yuo were 20 years ago.
I was very upset when I read that, and it made me cry as it did to many people I know, because he was a very caring father, husband, boss, collegue and person to look up to.
One of his quotes was something like
"But I put my life on line to save animals"
He died doing what he wanted. Loving what he wanted, I am sure he will always be remembered:)
