This would be awesome if they managed to pull this off. Fibre Optic would have to be the standard connection though for this to work.

I know you wrote this a couple of days ago, and it's funny that this was the first thing I saw when I logged on here, as m fiance and I were just discussing this topic at breakfast.

While I find the concept interesting, I see several issues with it.

First, the pro's.

Streaming the content over broadband is a great idea, and it reduces the cost for not only the publisher of the game, but also the gamer to purchase it.

Having a slew of titles at your fingertips is an awesome idea as well, because maybe one of your friends wants to play, and you can join them even if you didn't "own" the game previously.

Second the con's.....

Purchasing content and not having that content physically is a little risky. As one article that I read stated, this will definately have an impact on the used game market.
Knowing that you can't trade-in games to compensate the cost of other games is a bit worrisome, and yes, the game prices would be less with digital distribution, but as read as well, only by about 30%.

Being that this is server-based, you may not have the ability to play with individuals across the country. Dependant upon where the servers are located, this may be a regional based option only.

If there is no hardware mass storage system, how do you save personal options, level attainments and saves, additional gear achievements, etc. I guess this is something we'll have to find out--hopefully they'll release more information on this topic as it's not currently on their website.

---------------------------------------------------------

My personal opinion is that this looks interesting, but I don't know. I'm not one to pay for things that I don't have physically. I've known people who only download music digitally, and then their computers failed, died, their ipods broke or were stolen, and everything was gone.....

I don't know... I guess we'll just have to wait till this winter to find out.

Definately a great topic Jezabelle!

That's cool!
But I totally am an Xbox freak, and I honestly loveeeee my giant TV in comparison to my teensie Mac screen.
I don't think I'd have fun playing Halo with 18 ladies in the room on a tiny screen. xD

I don't think that this will hurt the used Game Market. Honestly, that's one market that video (game/movie) stores may rely on, but the developers could go without it and let's be honest- they're the ones that produce the games in the first place. So, making them happy is my over all priority and if this is their holy grail, I say go for it. Not to mention, if anything, it'll promote more informed consumer decisions because you have a chance to play the game on your membership, then have the option of buying it retail if not having a physical copy bothers you. If you don't like the game, you don't have to bother buying it at all. This is really honestly a direct distribution of Gamefly or Blockbuster.

But with that aside, let me first off address that OnLive, if they go through with what they're planning - this will not be a 4th generation console. You need to realize up front that this is a PC only product with a nod towards console players. What you'll have as a set-top box will more then likely be able to only handle games made ~5 years ago- if that. Expect Frogger and Galaga clones- maybe some of the first Lara Croft games, too. No Halo or Killzone.

As for the PC/Mac side of things, that's a different story and completely relies on the developers confidence in the service. This idea has the potential to become the next Steam if done correctly, but I doubt it'll get that far. Way too much licensing, way too many hurdles and I just can't see this idea making it into fruition. On top of that, PC gaming has been on the decline for the past 5 or so years now unless you're a WoW player.

While this may give the PC gaming industry a little nudge, I doubt it will do a whole lot for it unless you can get major developers and publishers on board. If they fail in getting Microsoft, Treyarch, Epic, id, EA, Rockstar, Bungie, Blizzard, Take Two, Atari, Midway in anyway shape or form, they're dead in the water. And those are all developers and publishers they need on their side. Also, you can forget about Valve offering their library...one: they don't need onLive because they have Steam, two: onLive is a direct competitor OF Steam, so you can basically alienate the probably 20-30% of American PC gamers left out their that use Valve titles exclusively from your product, seeing as how they're about the only major developer left that believes in the PC.

I kind of thought this whole thing was dead in the water, anyways- haven't heard much about it lately. *shrug* Anyways, just my two cents.
