I would'nt recommend any specific brand. But for gaming definately have to go with a dedicated video card (duh)
In the links to newegg would recommend at least the current gen-mainstream cards.. Nvidia 9500-9650/ATI 4600.

I don't want to sound like a salesman or anything, but PMS|H2O have a 5% discount with Alienware. The only problem there is that you'd still be over your 1k limit.

'course... how "heavy" will the gaming be?

As has been intimated, it's very difficult to find a gaming laptop for $1,000. If you can get a decent one for under $2k, that's usually considered a bargain.

On Alienware's site, you can get a bare-bones Area-51 m15x for $1,099.

That's still not top of the line video and only 2GB of RAM, and the case is flimsy as heck. It won't stand up to heavy travel.

What do you want to use it for and what games would you want to play on it? I really only recommend laptops of any kind for the people who absolutely need them. As convenient as they are, they aren't great value for the money, and they don't last long.

Here is my honest opinion about gaming on a laptop... don't. For what youll spend getting a fairly good one, I can build you a far superior desktop for half as much, and use the remaining to get a mediocre laptop if it is a must. I don't mean to dissuade you, but I really have to voice my thought on the matter. And yes, I am inserting my foot in my mouth I know, but I do so with confidence you will get what your needs require and not mine.

For a laptop you can get the following for under 1,000 bucks if you already have an O/S and optical drives.
Motherboard - Asus M2N series (AMD)
Processor - AMD x2 6400+ 3.2GHZ
RAM - 4gigs Corsair DDR2 with heat sinks
Harddrive - Name Brand <here> 500gig 7200RPM
Case - These run around 80.00 bucks for a modest one
Power Supply - 750watt Corsair TX series
Video Card - Nvidia 8800 GTS (just one but if you get two this is where the 750watt power supply comes in).
Sound Card - Go with a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 to save some money, but there are better ones that don't use your RAM

This is the basic setup I had with the PC I just sold for 800.00 big ones on Ebay about 3 weeks ago before getting back into consoles. But, you can read this whole deal in the (introduce yourself) section.

I don't know I'm a college student so gaming on a desktop isn't that much of an option. I personally have the alienware m17x so far it's held up great but it's a little over your price range.
