Well, as the title suggests ;)
I had the original xbox and sold it once I had completed Halo, but back then I was living with a teeny tv and no broadband. Now I have a big screen TV and broadband with a small network (OK not small :P ) that still has room for a computer or 7. I *really* want to play Halo2, but cant reall justify the cost if thats all im gonna play, is their anything else thats shelling out the cash for, RPG's FPS's are what I like best, and my gf just loves anything violent that doesnt take too much involvement :) Oh and vampires lol.
If not...well a new iBook could prove usefull lol

The answer to your question "is it worth it" will vary from person to person, but I'll throw out my opinion for what its worth... ultimately, it dpenends on what types of games you play, and what sort of experience you're looking for.
If you've been primarily a PC gamer and are looking for a good console to try out, this is the closest you will get to a PC exprience on a console. There are a ton of great games in the works, though most keep being pushed back. The ones to keep your eye out for (which wont be on PC as far as I know) are:
AAA platform specific titles:
---------------------
Mass Effect
Too Human
Blue Dragon
Lost Oddessey
Halo 3
Gears of War
Games that are multi platform or carry slightly less hype
------------------
[-eM-] Enchant Arms
GTA IV
Resident Evil 5
and there are ton of live arcade games like this (http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2924_1_en.html) one in particular (check out the movie.. it looks like great fun!). The vision camera is coming out soon. basically, there is a LOT this console has to offer and is offering it either right now or in the very near future. I also only mentioned upcomign games, there are games already out which are great (though can be found on other platforms in some cases).
Plus, you have a great community full of people who play these games to share your experiences with.. thats always a bonus and helps with enjoying new games.

Well the 360 to me, hmmmm yup it was worth it, dead riseing and N-3 and several other games and super duper. and the online system is super too, and the gamer points you get ,and there are atchivements when you do something in a game such as get stuff or beat a level, etc, and there is the arcade thing, and it has some very good games from the past. well i would give it 8.5/10 but it did have some flaws, such as i had to get it changed a few times but now its okay. well thats my opion

Well I heard the first couple of batches could overheat, but that the new ones are fine. Mind you the battery on my year old iBook was just recalled, so cant really bank on them fixing everything lol

I heart my 360, if not for the games I've played, then for the dashboard itself.
The dashboard is sooo easy to manuever and use. I've never used anything else that has been quite so easy, and quite as attractive as the 360 dashboard.
Plus, the arcade games give you unlimited amounts of ways to burn freetime. And there is sure to be a game that will cater to your desires.
Then, there's the Marketplace, where you can go to download a number of different things. Unsure of a game, and would like a better look at it before you buy it? Go to the Marketplace and download a video of it. Still unsure? Go back and download the demo.
And once you buy a game and love it, you can customize your dashboard with themes partaining to that game. So that when you get online, you'll have your favorite game staring back at you from the get go.
Also, movie trailers are readily made available to download for free, as well as fan videos, instructional videos, music videos, and even some Red vs. Blue episodes.

Yup, and as far as games right now that you might like:
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (Tom Clancy gameplay, realistic warfare)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Tons of dungeons, enemies, spells, items, and customization oppurtunities. Great game)
Perfect Dark Zero (FPS, and Joanna Dark. It's alright, but there are better)
Prey (Sci-Fi FPS, with a Native American undertone)
Dead Rising (zombies, no vamps though)
Condemned: Criminal Origins (if you're into horror games)
Hitman: Blood Money (Very good game, you play a Hitman. Duh)
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure others will be willing to add on to that list.

Its the same game, with the same characters, but its really just not on the same level. Almost everyone was disappointed in the final product. If you are a neutral fan, and play Perfect Dark Zero without comparing it to the original, then its a good play. But if your a fan of the original, you'll undoubtedly be disappointed.
Lets not forget Call of Duty 2. Great game for the system.

You know your old when the original actually is better than the remake *cries*

haha. That means nothing.
Hardcore gamers know the difference between the original and the remake.
I wouldn't call you old. I'd call you Hardcore.
:P
Worth is indeed very subjective, and depends on your budget as well as a variety of other things. I like my 360 a lot, but still play on my PC plenty as well, so its not as if its taken my gaming time exclusively. Also you need to look at the games and see if they're your type. Maybe take a trip and check out some of the demo stands. Its really a solid console when it comes to operation,, pretty intuitive and I enjoy the game. Actual worth is very specific to your situation, but I have no doubt you'll enjoy the console is you decide the money required is not too high.

I just wanted to echo the positive commetns here. I too have found it worth every penny. One feature not covered is the ability to play games while downloading content in the back ground.
As for games thre are many good ones at this point. Perect Dark Zero was an average FPS game that suffered from high expectations and a cheesey single player storyline. Other than that its not so bad.
Other noteworthy titles:
Chromehounds is great online Mech play
Saints Row if you are a GTA fan
others alreadymentioned that are good - Oblivion, Top Spin 2, GRAW, CoD2, PGR, DOA4
If you like the generes - Nighty-nine Nights, Kameo, Condemed and Fight Night, Madden are also quality games.

Is Saint's Row worth getting? I've heard good things about it, which is surprising.

Is it worth buying a 360? Let me put it this way... not only did I camp outside Best Buy for 17 hours to get mine, but afterwards, I actually got a job on the Xbox Live team. Not only did I want to play it, but I wanted to WORK on it! :)

I waited 3 hours in line for mine, in cold-*** Norway. And just from the very instant I opened the package I was happy with my purchase - I spent most of the weekend playing Project Gotham Racing 3, and got the next-gen feel right there.
When Sunday came along, I actually had the imprint of the left analog-stick on my left thumb :p
Oh, and if you need to justify a purchase - UNO! ;)

If you don't have HDTV to play it on, it is slightly downgraded in quality, just because that's one of the things I enjoy most. The beauty.
Also, if you don't have access to Xbox Live (ie: funds to purchase it/cable or dsl/ or internet at home), that greatly detracts from the Xbox 360's appeal.

If you don't have access to Xbox Live, just don't get an Xbox 360 period. That'd definitely be a waste of 400 bucks in my book, because that's probably the thing that'll keep me playin mine.

I have cable, 4Mb with the option to upgrade to 10

That'll work fine. I think I have 4mb as well, and it works fine.
