I had that happened to me once I fixed it by fiddling with the cords checking all the software then I found out my case was cracked. ;)
That guy doesn't sound like somebody I'd want to go to. Also might want to check the stores that have one guy with his own store those are actually great computer shops and they don't charge you outrageous prices like best buy. I could do some of the stuff they are selling for free.
One guy my very friend bought a software from best buy he used to work there been putting Anti virus stuff and cleaning the files etc

I can't help you with this question any farther than that. I'm not really good with hardware I can plug anything in fix something simple but this sounds like hardware malfunction.
My area of specialties is in Software. Anyone else care to help?
EDIT: I actually know a Virus that messes up the sound cards.
I made one that makes people hear the rick roll song. Some can actually destroy the sound cards including the entire computer by making it not start up ever again. People can target certain parts of the computer.
GL GL Hope you fix it soon gamers love sound based video games.
All the best,

Yeah it also depends on how old it is I know one of my headsets perfect till a couple weeks ago boom disabled poor manufacture. It was perfect but then it just went dead like a time bomb.
GL the device drivers might not actually matter if the thing is actually broken.
