View Full Version : Large Signature Sizes

I hate to sound like a whiner but it's really bugging me to see huge signatures floating around on the forums.

There are rules as far as I know concerning signature sizes. They are even stickied in this forum. Is there anyway we can report signatures outside the range?

I have a large resolution and when it is big on my screen I can imagine how big it must be for someone with a more typical resolution.

agreed.

i also see multiple people with more than 1 signature, plus a couple banners, plus a quote that is a paragraph long. its quite annoying.

Well here are the rules as from Rip's stickied post: (post found here (http://www.pmsclan.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23162))

1 signature no bigger then 500 x 150 pixels exactly.

1 small gamercard/stat card or userbar no bigger then 350 x 25 pixels or appears that size.

3) No more then 3 small sticky items such as 3 Easter eggs or 3 small giffs.

4) Total of 4 lines of text.

I see the stat bar thing changed used to be 2..

I was told about the size limit of 500x150, however I still made mine (as well as Crossfires') to 600x128. I haven't gotten a message saying it was unacceptable yet, but if need be I can easily shrink them down.

... is 600x128 acceptable? Keep in mind, I only have it and a single line of text in my signature and not the full: sig, gamercard, easter eggs, 4 lines of text, etc.

I'm not the one making the rules.. but the rules do say "exactly".

My personal opinion is that the width doesn't really bother me (though I have a widescreen..) it's more or less when they are really tall. You'd have to take that up with Rip I guess :p

Whats thius easter eggs thing then ive never heard of this in a sig before ? :s

We havent really been cracking down on them because of all the drama it causes. I really wish there was an easy system that does limits but there really isn't any. You are welcome to report any sigs you think are to big by just reporting the post and saying the signature.

And besides, most people just don't read our rules and don't know.

there is, its called "SigResiZe" or something similar.

regardless of size, an extra 100px could mean anywhere between an extra 3kb to an extra 3mb, not everyone has access to high speed, and not everyone has a connection that can handle high image. dimensions aren't a big issue, as the forums width is pre-defined, so anything smaller than 700px should fit without scrolling, however the rules are set in place to avoid any spanning of the site layout and to keep load times low. Forget calling it drama, these people complaining about not being able to have their sigs bigger than the rules are completely disregarding consideration for people with lesser than them.

Common logic tells us rules are put there for a reason.

Well, should anyone ever tell me that my sigs (and those that I've made for others) are slowing down their experience on the forums because they take too long to load I'll gladly resize them or at least try to make them smaller in size.

... and as for your "Common logic tells us rules are put there for a reason" comment, how many movies/shows/books/etc. have told us that "Rules are meant to be broken."?

Now I'm not encouraging people to break the rules... oh ****, off topic. My bad.

Tiki

that was directed at those causing drama over something as petty as sig sizes. some rules are placed to protect people, physically and emotionally... as others are set for property protection and equality. i'd say just having the decency to follow logically correct rules is just a way of showing your respect, if you don't want to, sig away my friend.

Anex
01-29-2009, 04:22 PM
They do have a setting (and it is on) but you cant prevent someone to linking off site to a larger size. There are some signatures larger that in this thread because they are linked off-site.

Anyway I'm not trying to cause "drama" (didn't think it would tbh) I was just bothered.

Kahlo you are welcome to give as many infractions as you like. BTW a certain "clan" about 75% of the time takes it personally. I can't even count how many times I have had members go off on me over their sigs. I just got tired of it. I only give them if their like REALLY BIG.

However I have tried multiple mods to resize linked pictures and they work some of the time. The problem is, it still has to load the image. All it does is load it and then use javascript to resize it.

But yes I HATE large signatures. I think it should honestly be have a picture OR text.

its petty for people to be upset about the size of their sig. it's the rules. when you sign up on this forum it asks if you have read the rules and do you accept them. if you said yes, and you disobey the rules, you should be given an infraction. it isnt fair to people who obey the rules to sit here and watch people who have gigantic sigs and aren't penalized for it or even warned. regardless of how many people go off on you snake its part of what your supposed to do like it or not, i'll gladly let people go off on me, i dont give a care about what most people say on here. it's the rules, if they go off on you, theres another infraction, they dont like it? get the **** out.

it isn't fair and should be enforced, i'll gladly become a sig nazi with you kahlo

Well here are the rules as from Rip's stickied post: (post found here (http://www.pmsclan.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23162))

I see the stat bar thing changed used to be 2..

This has been our standard for a very very long time if you notice the original Code of Conduct (http://www.pmsclan.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2807) thread, that I changed the date of I posted a few examples of what people can do there:

Avatars & Sigs

Avatar: When choosing an avatar please follow the posting guidelines above as far as the type of picture you can post.

*1 avatar no bigger then 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

Sigs: When choosing an signature please follow the posting guidelines above as far as the type of picture you can post.

This is the max you can include in the sum of your signature at one time:

1) 1 signature no bigger then 500 x 150 pixels exactly.

Example:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f61/Gypsyflypms/Gypsygif-1.gif
Created for me by Ivy back on the orginal forums.

2) 1 small gamercard/stat card or userbar no bigger then 350 x 25 pixels or appears that size. If you have an Xbox 360 Gamercard it can now be put into your profile. Only Xfire gamercards will be allowed in your sig, although you can add those in your profile as well, they are only viewable by actually going into someone's profile. Please limit all userbars to one. If you want to use 3 usebars instead of a sig, that's fine.

Example:

http://card.mygamercard.net/sig/Gypsyfly+PMS.png
Curtesy of Mygamercard.net (http://www.mygamercard.net/index.php)

Or

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f61/Gypsyflypms/fdstick1.jpg

3) No more then 3 small sticky items such as 3 Easter eggs or 3 small gifs.

Example:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f61/Gypsyflypms/gtnlpmsclan48x48-1.jpg or http://www.boomspeed.com/egraphics/we972.gif (http://www.elementsgraphics.net/index.php?id=eggs)

4) Total of 4 lines of text. You can now add 4 lines of text instead of 1. Please don't abuse that by adding a paragraph under your sigs. Admins/Mods will be enforcing this rule from now on.

Example:

Myspace (http://www.myspace.com)|1up (http://www.1up.com)|PMS Clan (http://www.pmsclan.com)|Ninja's (http://www.realultimatepower.net/)

Please be considerate to your fellow forum members as far as sigs. It looks terrible when a screen is stretched or takes forever to load because of your signature. We’ve given you some leeway in allowing so much in a sig, more so then many other forums, so please take that in mind. This can always be changed if the privilege is abused.

Most of those same rules posted a long time ago, people now have to accept to join, it's still pinned in several places as well. People just don't pay attention...super annoying.

It does not work that way with our policy of a open warm clan. Its not our community members that are the problem, its the clan members.

That little 2 I bolded threw me off LOL.

But yeah I will be a "sig-nazi" I mean I have already complained at like 3 people about it.. so why not go on ? :x

It is easier when you make your own sigs because then you can at least figure it out and modify it yourself. :)

In my opinion mine is too small because of the ratio but I didn't want to be over so that is what I dealt with. Maybe later I'll figure out how to make it a tad bigger without going over. Can't be arsed atm really.

you can use regex to pull all of the information from img tags, with the image you can determine the size, resize using PHP and CSS, and then either cache it or store it locally... minor server side loading and very effective, no javascript.
