Ok here's the story:

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

Monday - August 21, 2006 | by Darren Sumner

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

SG-1 has struggled in the ratings all summer, with the record-breaking tenth season premiering with a 1.4 household rating -- down more than 20 percent from last season's average. After a brief climb to a 1.6 in its second week, the show fell to a 1.3 in week four.

Viewers and production personnel alike have blamed a number of factors for the show's dramatically lower ratings, from SCI FI and Sony's lack of promotion to the removal of anchor show Battlestar Galactica from the Friday night line-up, to new competition from such shows as USA's hit Monk.

Though also down significantly in the ratings this summer, Atlantis has consistently scored better than SG-1.

"Studio executives are working to identify an alternative outlet for Stargate SG-1," Multichannel News said, citing sources close to the production.

Stargate SG-1 premiered on Showtime in the United States in July, 1997, where it aired for five years before the pay cable network cancelled it. In 2002 MGM brokered a deal to continue production and move the show to SCI FI Channel, where it became the cable channel's biggest hit and aired ten times per week in reruns.

In addition to holding the record for the longest-running science fiction series ever produced in North America, the series is largely responsible for making SCI FI a Top 10 cable network. Though the writers intended to end the show several times, its larger, newfound audience on basic cable rejuvinated the series, extending its life far beyond the average science fiction series.

Series lead Richard Dean Anderson left the show in 2004, to be replaced by Ben Browder and Beau Bridges when the show relaunched in a new creative direction in Season Nine. Ratings remained strong, though no longer at their historic peak. The show's producers had even intended to rebrand the show Stargate Command, but SCI FI ultimately opted to stick with the established SG-1 name.

Ironically, this is the first year since Season Four that plans were already in place, both creatively and in signed actor contracts, for another year. The show has lived on year-to-year since moving to SCI FI, with the writers forced to write a possible series finale every year -- only to find the show renewed once again.

Following the September 22 mid-season finale, SCI FI Channel intends to air the final 10 episodes of Stargate SG-1 beginning in March, 2007, a source confirmed to GateWorld.

What is to come? Both the producers and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have expressed a desire to continue the hit franchise with not just Stargate Atlantis, but something new in the future -- be it an SG-1 feature film or TV mini-series, or a third television show. The benefits of a simultaneous dual production in Vancouver, with two projects sharing producers, writers, and crew members, are tremendous for the studio. And Stargate is owner MGM's flagship television property, having recently been compared to its venerable "James Bond" film franchise in importance.

MGM has a great deal invested in an expanding field of licensing, official conventions, syndication, and international TV distribution. Notable is the upcoming MMORPG video game Stargate Worlds, perhaps the franchise's largest licensed project to date, due out at the end of 2007.

Meanwhile, Stargate Atlantis will have the chance to step out of the shadow of its parent show and stand on its own two feet. Though the foundational chapter of the Stargate saga draws to a close, hope remains for the future.

An official announcement with additional details on the future of Stargate is expected this week. Stay with GateWorld for the very latest.

Stargate SG-1 airs Fridays at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on SCI FI Channel in the United States.

First Farscape now sg-1?!!! The crappy ratings are likely due to the ori storyline
so i'd quickly wrap up that and get back to core sg-1 values then watch the ratings climb.

The only way i'd support sci-fi's decision is if the actor's want out/to do other stuff or to do a tv/real movie rather than the series.

On friday i always watch sci-fi-used to be from 8-11 now it's just 9-11.
Not re-running battlestar or dr who at 8 i bet sci-fi's testing sg-1's ratings or perhaps trying to put the old dog to bed....poor cladia she was on farscape and now
sg-1's supposed to be canned...well i'm sure that sg-1's cast can be moved to atlantis some with inportant roles some with bit parts....time will reveal all.

The poor ratings can also be due to the fact that it's summer time. People generally watch less television during the summer. A lot of SG-1 watchers might also be gone on vacation or something.

It's stupid of Sci Fi to can a show based on ratings collected during a time when people watch less television.

There's good news however. SG-1 won't go down without a fight. The producers are looking for another channel to pick it up.

Well I have to desent - I loved this show - but it long ago lost my attention - probably seson 7 or 8 or so. Its just tired at this point. All good things come to an end. I'd rather see a nice wrap up with dignity than to drag the show out even longer.

All shows run their course and I'd say the poor ratings are an indication of that. Several stars have moved on and the core of what made the show - the four team members exploring - gone away with 'promotions' and that sort of thing.

Me - SG-A has not hooked me in at all - it was something to watch waiting for BattleStar Galactica to come on.

The game was cancelled many times, but always managed to rise from the ashes. There's also a NEW Stargate game in the works (pre-production), an MMORPG. Click on the link in my sig to go the the site for more details.

As a fan of Stargate SG1 since it's inception, I was pissed to hear of it's cancellation from the network. Why cancel a good science fiction show when the channel shows ECW which has NOTHING to do with science fiction? And what the hell is Who want’s to be a super hero anyway! Stargate SG-1 is the flagship show for the Sci-Fi Channel they will lose all of their viewers forever
Please sign my petition here it this link Thanks http://www.PetitionOnline.com/aug2906/petition.html

Not as well as an FPS, but we'll see. Too bad "The Alliance" was canceled. It was looking like a pretty awesome game.

Okay people let us step back a second and think. SG-1 is in it's 10th season. It has gotten consistantly worse since the 7th season and should have ended then.

It is Stargate's time! It is over! Let it go so the healing can start.

Instead turn to BattleStar Gallactica which happens to be millions of times better than this Stargate season and isn't so old that it draws on and on.

I refuse to sign this petition as Stargate was dead years ago. Star Gate Atlantis and BattleStar are the children and should be nurtured. We shouldn't be wasteing our resources keeping a dieing show running.

It isn't worth it.

you do know farscape was made in australia.. although very popular... just idiot poeple that managed it.. as well as it going onto pay tv over seas BUT if they were to air it on public tv it would be more famous.. poplular and sucessful as sg-1 was (sg-1 was aired in australia on public tv resulting in a humungeous fan base here)

SG-1 used to air on NBC here. Farscape I remember aired on a channel here called YTV, but then disappeared I assume to air on SCI FI.

Personally, i thought the series should have ended with season 8 and "Mobeus". I dont really enjoy season 9... more shows should take the cue of Seinfeld and quit while they're up.

Thats not to say I didnt really enjoy the show when it was around.. its just not the same without Col. Jack and when series re-define their scope to allow new villians and new plot possibilities it sort of looses its shine. Thats what Atlantis and sequil series are for.

The SG MMO in development.. now that looks awesome!

p.s. I'll still support it just for others who like it, just sharing my opinion that perhaps its better for them to let it end strong than wither away.

I think it's how they put the shows up. I never like watching all the random shows that didn't involve the plot and they had so much of it too, then you actually get to see the show that involves the main plot then they kill you with it by releasing another main plot episode three weeks later. What was horrible when they do a mid season finale and you have to wait months just to see it again and by that time you forgot what just happened. They should just release another Farscape series and put Ben Browder and Claudia Black on there because I hardly see Ben get his full potiential on SG1

They do all the "filler" episodes otherwise the season would end a lot sooner than the 22 episodes it has now.

I'd rather see 22 episodes of Stargate with some fillers, than see 15 with only main plot.

I enjoyed the filler as much as the episodes which moved the main plot along. They're necessary as they are key to establishing characters, character motivation and character interaction/relationships.

Without all the filler, you would barely have any sense of who the characters are and what they mean to each other.

With that said, I also understand where you come from and its a completely valid point. Sometimes filler can be really annoying, especially if you're really into the main plot and want to see how it progresses ;)

Like this weeks episode of SG-1. We got to delve into Vala and Daniel's relationship a little more.

Same with Atlantis. We learned more about McKay and his background.
