View Full Version : President Barack Obama's Inaugural Address

No matter what our political views, no matter what we may think, no matter what our background, I hope that all of us can take something from this historic day. And that those of us that are American's can say with pride we are proud to be citizens of this great nation for we stand for freedom, prosperity and a chance for all to succeed!

These are a few of my favorite passages from President Obama's speech today:

"Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met."

...

"For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do."

...

"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."

...

:mvclap::mvboogie::mvclap:

Please, keep your negative comments to yourself, this is not a debate thread, simply a thread of love and peace and joy no matter if you support his views or not. This is a time for us all to come together, no matter what we may think personally. This world does not revolve around each of us, it revolves around all of us. Thank you. <3

Now I may not be American, but I know that President Obama will definetly be bringing some changes that will help the world in a whole. I'm excited to see exactly what he has in store for the United States, and how that'll affect us up here in Canada. With any luck he'll make sure that we (and/or our children) won't see a world-wide economic depression, and maybe we'll finally pull our troops out of Iraq/Afghanistan* - I can only hope for the best.

Now only time will tell...

*I don't disagree with what's going on in the Middle East, I'm just tired of hearing about soldiers dying. If he doesn't pull them out, at least maybe he can work on getting them some better protection from IEDs and whatnot.

Fun Fact: His limousine has 12cm of armor plating and bullet proof glass - but I'm sure that's expected from a presidential vehicle nowadays.

I usually can't stand to watch a speech, I get bored. And like Snake said our last president was so bad at it. Today however I found myself rushing to work to catch him being sworn in and glue to the tv during his speech. It was so motivational and I felt a great sense of hope and pride for our future. i feel like good things are coming and I can't wait to see what they are.

To go along with that hope and joy I felt I was saddened by news that my friends mother past away. The reason was no health insurance and when they finally went in to find out what was wrong it was to late. No matter what, we need a change; things like that shouldn't happen in todays world. I think our president cares about those who are truly in need in this country and it's about time something was done.

*Excited to see what lies on the horizon of tomorrow.*

When he said "Now we all need to get up, dust ourselves off, and go to work" that was a good line.. but Im pretty sure he said it differently. I watched the whole speech and thought it was pretty great, i mean come on he had alot of expectations, so he was probably really stressed about it. That makes it a whole lot better that he did great.

I just want to remind people that Barack Obama is a politician like every other US President... ever.

Like with the guy that gave his invocation. He is an anti-gay rights person, the LGBT community got mad and magically a gay bishop got invited. That's not Obama trying to include everyone. That's simple political PR and nothing more.

I hope he will be better than Bush but I'm cautious as everyone should be when dealing with politicians. Take everything with a grain of salt. :)

I am soo happy that I can actually say that I am proud of the president that we have now. We have gone through some tough times as a country the last couple of years, I think he is the man to pull us outta the ditch and get back to being respected. Obama is the man. His speeches always give me chills because he speaks the truth. Cannot wait until he proves all those haters wrong that he can be a strong leader. WOOT OBAMA!

"As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers ... our found fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake."

This statement brings tears to my eyes... as it is so true. Let us not forget what makes this country great, or we will end up forgetting who we are, and why we are.

Half my school watched it in the Gym, and the other in the Cafeteria. We basically didn't have class for the first two periods. His speech was amazing. Did anyone else crack up when the Chief Justice screwed up the Oath, and Obama was like "..execute..huh?" Also interesting that Biden was President, not just Vice President, before Obama. Bush's term ended at noon, and only Biden had been sworn in.

The media is building up Obama too much. No president will ever live up the expectations they are setting. America has a lot of problems but has for a LONG time. And we have less problems than any other country in the world. America isn't as depressing as most people think it is. Our way of life is still better than any other place in the world easily.

For example our unemployment is still lower than any socialist European country. The media is building up Obama like he is Jesus. Good luck living up to that. lol

Hard to judge him as best before he has actually proven it. It was nice to hear a gifted speaker; some of his ideas I agree with, and some I don't. I've been around too long to jump on anyone's bandwagon before they've proven themselves through their actions. This would be true for a candidate from either party.
Until the two parties stop bashing each other, there will always be a lack of unity. If and when we all start working together for the welfare of our country and not the party agendas, things will not change.
I am neither Republican or Democrat. I am an American.

H2O Creation
01-25-2009, 03:03 PM
the amount of times i've heard that saying... we are in need for change... i would be a billionaire if i had a dollar for every time it was said... and i'm sure in ten years time when the situation is the same as it is now, you'll be saying it again for another president.. it may be later or it may be sooner but it will happen... the english press say that the england football manger is one of the hardest jobs to be under took. who ever gets this position will only last a short period of time before they are sacked or pushed out, ironically the usual cause of this is our own press but compared to running a country and not any old country, but one of the leading countries in the world its a pinch of salt. the suggested achievements and goals of obama are not far from the sayings of a mad man. don't take this the wrong way as his speech creates hope and prosperity throughout and in some sort of utopia it would bring great things but that's where the problem lies, you don't live in a utopia so when these acts are not delivered the only thing that the party has achieved and i would like to reiterate that as party not one man... they have only gone and dug their own grave. i have seen this happen time and time again and when it does go wrong who ever is in charge will usually blame the government before them. satire and politics go hand in hand, it will never change... i'm not saying obama is a bad person or a bad president his intentions are great and if he did succeed it would be inspirational. but i would also like to say that any one reading this i hope is not too hard done by and is fortunate to have a roof over their head or has food on the table like a lot of others don't in this world. so just remember you have your health today, you had it yesterday and hopefully you'll have it tomorrow. one person can create hope but it takes all of us to make change.

Mary Jane PMS

one person can create hope but it takes all of us to make change.

I agree... this is a great quote btw. The President has a lot of work to do, and is faced with many challenges. It will be a struggle I am sure, and I don't expect him to keep up with all of what he has said. But he has been brave enough to say it, and I think he is the one person right now with the right team to get things done.

It isn't just on him tho, just like the last 8 years weren't all because of Bush. People blame Bush, but it was him and a lot of other people that got us to where we are right now.

President Obama just seems like an honest, hardworking, caring, intelligent person who will put his heart and soul into making things better for others.

But like you said "one person can create hope but it takes all of us to make change."

who's been the longest running president was it Ronald Reagan?

I don't quite get what you mean by this? If you are asking who has been president for the longest it has been quite a few. The President serves for 4 years, but can be reelected for another 4, which makes the term in office 8 years. However, after those 8 years, they cannot run for President again. The two-term tradition had been an unwritten rule (until the 22nd Amendment). Which is why Franklin D. Roosevelt served as President from March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945. So that would be the longest running president: FDR.

So the Presidents that have been in office for 8 years are:
George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe
Andrew Jackson
Ulysses S. Grant
Theodore Roosevelt
Woodrow Wilson
Franklin D. Roosevelt -- (4 terms!!)
Harry S. Truman
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Ronald Reagan
Bill Clinton
George W. Bush

Hope that helped answer your question! :)
