OMG!

Quick problem overview:

Over the past week I've been having crashing problems with COD4 for PC. The game starts up fine, but eventually locks up after playing for a while. Sometimes I can play an hour before it dies, other times it locks up minutes into the match. When the game crashes it dies hard, locking my entire system and requiring a hard restart using the reset button on the from of my computer.

Everytime the system crashes I lose all stats for that play session, including kills, promotions, etc. Talk about an annoying problem! Worse yet, if I try to change my name in the multiplayer options screen, I get a error message and it resets my stats back to *ZERO* and makes me restart at level 1. To counter this issue, I've since learned to backup my profile after every promotion.

Problem:
Tired of dealing with constant COD4 crashes, this afternoon I backed up my profile and totally uninstalled the game. After restarting my system I reinstalled it, applied the patches and updates, then copied my profile back to the appropriate folder. Unfortunately, this profile restoration didn't work, and the game is insisting that I start over AGAIN at level 1.

Since starting to play this game, I've gone from:

PVT (level 1) - SGT I (Level 11) - PVT (level 1)
PVT (level 1) - CPL II (level 9) - PVT (level 1)
PVT (level 1) - 2LT (level 25) - LCPL II (level 6)

This latest one really get me:

LCPL II (level 6) - BG (level 43) - PVT (level 1)

This latest one cost me over 67,000 XP, 5,600 kills, and almost 23 hrs of play time. (Xfire logged 24 hrs of game time this week alone) Overall, by my calculations I should have hit LTG by now if I didn't have to keep starting the game over from level 1.

Has anyone else here had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? Please help!

A quick run down of your computers hardware stats would be helpful.

This way we can direct you to the latest drivers for your hardware to make sure they are up to date. Having outdated drivers, or running some beta drives can cause some stability problems, for example the next to last beta driver from nVidia caused lockups in some OpenGL games for me, namely Quake4.
I have also discovered that some XFire updates seem to cause instability problems too.

SO give us the processor type, mother board model, if available, video card type, and then any expansion cards you may have in your system, sound card, networking card, wireless card, etc. So we can nail down a potential cause.

==============
HARDWARE SPECS
==============
* Asus Rampage Formula Motherboard w/ Thermaltake ToughPower 1000W PSU
* Intel E8400 @ 4.6 GHz (9x513) w/ Freezone Elite TEC CPU Cooler
* 4 GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 PC-1066
* EVGA 9800GX2 1 GB w/ Matrox TripleHead2GO DE and 4 Samsung 22" LCD Monitors
* 6 - Western Digital RaptorX 150 HDD's (Short Stroked RAID0)
* SupremeFX II Digital Audio w/ digital TOSLINK Connection to Onkyo TX-NR1000 1000W Receiver & 14 Bose Home Speakers (2 zones)
* Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Custom Modded Vix Edition

All drivers are the latest official versions, no Betas. DX9c. Game patched to latest version 1.7 and punkbuster software updated to the newest version.

According to my Google search results, system lock ups during play are a common problem, but most attribute it to bad memory or software conflicts with Punkbuster. Memtest loops for hours with no errors, and I've tried running the game with nothing but the most critical stuff running. (No xfire, Rivatuner, etc)

My system runs 100% stable, and the OC was tested with 12+ hrs under Orthos, OCCT and Prime. All temps are normal, CPU temps at 100% load max at 46, and although video temps get toasty (mid 80's) during game play, the system can handle 2-3 hrs of Crysis without a problem. To rule out OC problems I tried clocking the system back down to stock specs, but the problem still persists. The lock up problem only occurs in COD4. All other games (Crysis, Battlefield 2142, Quake 3, Quake 4, enemy Territory-Quake Wars, Stalker, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament 3, Bioshock, Counterstrike, Counterstrike Source, etc) run perfectly.

What driver revision are you running?

I ask specifically because there are pages upon pages of known issues with COD4 running in SLI.

Some of the newer drivers have fixed this issue.

Please tell me what driver you are running, as there are some of the newer betas that are out now that specifically address these issues.

Are you sure you overwrote the correct files with your saved profile?

The only files that were overwritten were mpdata and config_mp.cfg

This is really driving me crazy!

I re-formatted my drive last week and I was able to load my cod4 profile. I made a back-up of the whole profiles folder. Then I went into Cod4 and create a profile- same name as the old one. Then i closed cod4 and replaced the current profiles folder with my back-up. I fired up cod4 and it works fine. hope it works for ya.

Currently running driver version 178.13 dated 9/25/2008.

Try rolling back to the 175.19's. Thats what i did when i was having issues with the 177.92's, and that helped correct my lock up issues with Quake4.

Im not currently running the same driver as you, the 178.13, without issue. Albeit in Vista 64.

Also, under your driver game profiles, what SLI render mode are you running?

The trick is to create a profile before you toss in your backup profile data, or it will get overwritten. Alot of games are that way.
