If you click on the above name within the "" marks on my post above, this will take you to their profile page on these forums.
If you then look down the right hand side you will see their gamercard - click on this and it will take you their profile on xbox.com (it may be advisable to log on to xbox.com before clicking their gamercard).
From this you can add them to your friends list or see the correct spelling you need to add them. It maybe that their lists are full - please send them a message explaining who you are etc. I hope this helps :D.
