The Real McCoy

Unassuming gamer gal, or hardcore fragger who owns all she sees? This is the distinction I had to make upon my first meeting with Nikki McCoy, aka PMS Stargirl on Xbox Live.
And the answer is, a little bit of both.
McCoy is a member of the PMS (Pandora's Mighty Soldiers) Clan, a well-known group in the gamer community and the premier clan for girl gamers who want to rub elbows, or battle rifles, with the best the Internet has to offer. About 500 women, ranging in age from 9 to 58, fill out the clan's roster, many of which are members of the PMS Elites - the name says it all.
The PMS women are an inclusive bunch who want more gamer girls to join in the fun. "Membership is not really based on skill as much as it is attitude," McCoy said.
Going off on others is a big no-no for these women, even when they are faced with some not-so-respectful male gamers. Though the numbers of female gamers is growing, a few of the men on Xbox Live still feel they have the run of the place and can say what they like.
McCoy remembers an interesting moment during a "Halo 2" game that happens to almost all female gamers É at least I know it has happened to me.
"We went into one of the big team battle slayer (matches), and during the whole game they were smack-talking. Saying, `Y'all need to get back in the kitchen,' and `Where's my sandwich?' And at the end of it, when we were about to go into another game, I got a friend request from the guy who was doing most of the smack-talking," she laughed.
Of course, this behavior is limited to a small percentage of the online community, and the PMS Clan members even have male counterparts they take into games with them.
"Every PMS girl has an H2O; their nicknames are `waterboys.' They are the PMS girl's best friend or somebody who, whenever we go into games, if we're being smack-talked, they'll support us," McCoy explained.
Though the Northeast Alabama area is teeming with male gamers, McCoy is the only PMS Clan member in Etowah County, but she says there are more members scattered throughout the state. And what a member she is. McCoy will be heading to the Major League Gaming Tournament in Orlando, Fla., on Aug. 25. This tournament basically is a qualifier for the big get-together in Sin City.
"They have the tournaments all over the U.S,. and the winners from all the different MLGs get to go to Las Vegas for the championship. They have free-for-all amateur bracket and pro bracket, and they have four vs. four amateur and pro bracket. I'm doing both."
McCoy is looking forward to the competition and even has lined up a sponsor, Fitness Plus, to help pay for event costs. Of course, these costs won't matter much if she sweeps the MLG tournament in Vegas and wins the various money prizes (first place in the "Halo 2" four vs. four tournament wins $100,000, according to the MLG Web site).
Many wonder what gets a gamer started down the road of late-night fragging sessions on "Halo 2" or an "Oblivion" addiction that's out of control. McCoy's first love was one that many gamers can identify with: "When I really got into gaming was when `Doom' came out on PC, and where I was working, when we weren't busy, we were allowed to play on the computer. The owner of the business had it on the computer. And of course when `Quake' came out was when it really hit me. I've played all the `Quakes,' all the `Dooms' and it just kind of blossomed from there," she said.
Though she has many different Xbox and Xbox 360 titles to take up her time, McCoy is serious about her membership in the clan and the required team training: "We have clan practice every night, and you're required to attend four practices a week to stay active."
With the sheer frequency of practices, if you are on Xbox Live playing "Halo 2," "Ghost Recon Advanced War Fighter "or "Call of Duty 2," then you are very likely to run into some PMS ladies. And watch out for PMS Stargirl. I mean, come on, how often do you actually meet someone who has had a "Killtacular" on "Halo 2?"
