I just bought an Xbox 360 Elite (WooHoo!!) and I decided I really want to play it through my PC monitor. I know all about the VGA thing from Microsoft and I don't particularly want to buy it. I have 2 video cards (ATI Radeon X1950 Pro) with video in and video out capabilities. I also have the cable to connect video in/out to the video card(s). So....

I've connected the audio plugs from the 360 to my surround sound, and the video plug to the "video in" plug on my cable. What am I supposed to do now? I know it's been done before, I just don't know how to do it myself :(

This is what ATI CATALYST Control Center says in the information tab:

Driver Packaging Version: 8.432-071101a-054435C-ATI CATALYST® Version: 07.11
Provider: ATI Technologies Inc
2D Driver Version: 6.14.10.6734
Direct3D Version: 6.14.10.0540
OpenGL Version: 6.14.10.7058
CATALYST® Control Center Version: 1.2.2425.37188
AV Stream (T200) Driver Version: 6.14.10.1086

What inputs do you have on your monitor? because the easiest way to make that work would be (imo) to hook it up via the HDMI port on the back of your 360. Other then that i would need to know what ports you have on your monitor. Seeing as your just wanting to hook up your 360 to your monitor you dont need to involve your computer in the process ,unless you want them both to run through the monitor then i would find TripleRed H2o's profile he has his computer/360 hooked up that way but i believe he has his computer and 360 running to a tv instead of a monitor.

actually i found a post and this is what one person suggested

"get VGA cables for the 360 and then a VGA splitter so you can run your PC and 360 to the monitor.. otherwise you will have to connect/disconnect everytime you want to switch between the 2."

if you want to see the rest of the thread heres the link: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=72611

Sorry im not much help but ive never done this before and have never wanted too i tend to like to have them separate in case i need to look something up while im playing.

Edit: after reading through that thread, i think all the info your looking for is right there :D then again without knowing what input/outputs you have on your monitor/pc i can go any farther in the help department.

I don't mind my PC running at the same time as the 360 (my PC is never off lol). I thought about connecting my 360 directly to the monitor, but I'd have to get the VGA adapter from Microsoft. That's what I'm hoping to avoid since I know I have the hardware to do it through my PC, I just have to figure out the software portion now.

Each video card has two DVI ports, monitor has a VGA and DVI port, both video cards have a 9-pin port for the cable I was talking about.

This is the cable:

Yeah, I goggled for a couple hours before posting here at all. The thread you linked has tons of info, but I'm trying to avoid the method they describe (VGA adapter). I have a support ticket open with ATI so hopefully that'll get me an answer. For now I'll just play through my TV.

Ya sorry man ive never really wanted to do that, so i really dont have any experience with it. To bad your monitor doesnt have an HDMI cable input ><

I might just replace my video card with one that has an HDMI input. I'm pretty happy with my TV though. It's not HD or anything, so I thought the 360 would look just average, but it actually looks really nice. I might keep it this way, I don't know yet.

Hmm....I have 2 options and a good excuse for each one..

1: New video card. Excuse: It's the only way to play my 360 through my computer.

2: HD TV. Excuse: The graphics from my 360 will look a lot better and then I don't have to buy a new video card.

For best quality and no lag - you'll want the VGA cable (or go through HDMI as a separate imput if available) - My current setup is VGA cable to the monitor - then my computer connects to the same monitor through DVI. There is a button on the monitor that allows source selection much like a TV.
Then i pipe the audio through the PC (The audio plug comes with the VGA cable) and off i go. Best route in my opinion, i had a TV tuner which i sent my 360 through a long time ago, but the quality is so much worse and often it will induce a slight delay between what happens and when you see it. (Not to mention no high definition!)

what i did was i got a 20 $ HDMI cable for my 360 and got just a seperate audio plug then got an HDMI VGA adapter then plugged that into my moniter and the sound into my speakers and X3's

hahaha. If I do end up going with my monitor idea I'll go with what Rip said. It's rather tempting to get a new HD TV though...

Decisions, decisions...
