Hey does anybody have a clue why my speeds would have dropped so much in the past 6 months?
My downloads have dropped to almost 1/4 of what i used to have. Also my Ping has nearly doubled. Any explanations or ways to possibly fix it?

Try another computer and not under a router first.

If you still get the same rates call Cox as most likely you have some really bad signal degradation or crosstalk (the drop in ping as well as transfer at the same indicates that)

Ok... i am going to set my desktop up now direct connection to the modem. Last night I couldnt host a room on cod4 and that has never happened to me before.

Ok... I had to call cox just now cause when i switched to the desktop it wouldnt let me connect. they had to totally reset my stuff. Now the speeds are. http://www.speedtest.net/result/292520212.png (http://www.speedtest.net) I just did another test and for some reason my speed to Seattle instead of Houston is actually faster for some reason.

Speedtest.net is pretty accurate but sometimes the servers they use arnt that perfect. I just tried on my home connection and it was dead on with my connection.

Mine used to be dead on with what it says i should get. But they built a huge condo/mall across the street and ever since then my internet speeds have gone steadily down.

its because cable is a shared line between your neighborhood, so more users slower internet

that explains it. well does anybody have a explanation for this. When i do a test from baton rouge to Seattle i get around 12k down and my ping goes to 44. But if i do it to Houston then it is about 3k down and 200 ping. It is actually faster for me to go through Auckland New Zealand then go through Houston.

Yeah..Aliens are probably monitoring your every move and plan a hostile take-over of earth through your bandwidth.

That actually doesnt explain a thing when using a speedtest site such as SpeedTest.net. Each server you connect to depends on how many stations your connection has to run through to reach that certain point. In some cases you will connect faster to a server across the ocean since it's pretty much a straight way there, regardless of the distance.

And the quality of servers that you are testing to have an impact on what you see. The more people testing on one server could make it also show slower for you while testing. Don't just rely on one server, do multiple in cities/states around you and such.

what he said

and use cox all so i have the 2ed best package its like 40$ i found with cox there servers are not the best one day you can have super fast internet and some days it can be VERY slow and it takes them weeks to fix

with cable its normal for your internet to flux it will not all ways be what you paid for

could all so be your router make sure your ports are forwarded or the cables you are using could be bad or the modem its self is not good enough or outdated or going bad

heres mine btw

Might as well go DSL, since FiOS doesn't look like it's in your area you might see if AT&T have u-verse around you. If not then DSL might be the way to go to get consistent pings. If you decide to do the switch ask AT&T for the 2wire modem. The modem has special features that most modem's don't have that communicates with the Central Office to correct inference and if you ever call tech support on stuff, they can take a look on their end and see whats the problem more in detail with it.

Hey update time. The internet went out in my area the night before yesterday. It was out all night but when i woke up in the morning. my speeds were almost what they were in March. A significant increase over the bs readings i got. I am sticking with cable. Atleast until I can either move to Dallas and get fios or some other place with fios!!!

Explanation is hops. Not the kind used to brew frosty beverages, but traffic from router to router.

Traffic is killed by that mall, no doubt about it. However, routers that your traffic jumps through to get to Seattle is lighter than the ones going to Houston. The answer is pretty simple. Seattle is 10 miles from a huge IT/Comp Sci hub. Microsoft and about 50 other major software companies are in the area. They pay top dollar for clean net access, and it shows when you cross their network traffic. Texas, on the other hand, has little reason to keep up to date with the latest and greatest.

Thus, the speed difference.

Still, all ISP's NEVER guarantee service. This is something I think they should be held accountable for (even comcast, which I use, is implementing a system that charges more if you USE MOST OF YOUR BANDWIDTH. Not exceed, because they prevent that with throttling, but they actually charge you more if you use the bandwidth they already promise you for the monthly fee you pay...

Well, Gun Monkey, that's bad news for me. :( I'm in Wyoming, and my internet connection comes from Montana. :(

Not necessarily bad news. If you're getting good ping times, and your connection isn't noticeably slow, you should be fine.

Unfortunately, if your net connection sucks, there may not be an alternative. Even if there is, it's not always better.
