It is not a big show anymore, it's a group of smal, personal meetings among press and the industry. Thus, E3 as anyone has every known it IS pretty much dead. Tycho says it best:

"Hearing that it's cancelled, or at any rate will be altered in "format and scale" (read: cancelled) is like hearing that Australia has been cancelled, or that the weak gravitational force is being temporarily suspended. It's not an event anymore..."

Yeah, I'm really mad at that. It was probly the coolest thing to see too.

In personal opinion, I'd like to see more of the games anyway, instead of all the flash and glamour that actually potentially takes away from the game being promoted.

I've been writing some stuff on it recently, its a really interesting development on all sides of the topic. Gut reaction - sheer terror. But the more I think about it, there really is some potential here to go back to what the event should be, and I have to laud them on that in some ways. I'll have a look at what it means for different industry segments on dpad hopefully in the next day or so.
