Try running these anti-spyware utilities

Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) & Ad-Aware 2007 (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5&cdlPid=10837062)

What are you using for Anti-Virus too?

I just use Norton it works great but you have to pay thats the only downside.

When you get your computer in such a mess, I always recommend backing up, popping in your windows disk and reformatting/reinstalling to be on a clean system. Normally when you get really infected it is next to impossible to get everything off.

you could try this Super Anti Spyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/)

I used freeware from AVG. both anti-spyware and anti-virus worked great...Or if you do like Snake said, you can backup all the files you want to keep and reformat your disc.

Or you could go the better route and dump Norton, McAfee, and the free crap off your list and go for Eset's Nod32 ;) Nod32 is currently the BEST antivirus to day.

Nod32 vs. other A/Vs in the VirusBulletin.com testing (http://www.eset.com/products/compare-NOD32-vs-competition.php)

I think you might be out of luck on this one. :mvsad:

Once your data gets scrambled like that, there's nothing you can do to fix it that I am aware of. CHKDSK saw problems with your file system and fixed those problems. So now that your file system is working OK again, what's left over is permanent.

You can corrupt the honest, but never make honest the corrupt...

Oh, it may be possible to restore older versions of the corrupted files. While the file itself is probably lost, sometimes you get copies of the same file hidden in the drive data. This is especially possible if you have copied the files at one to point to another folder etc. and is worth looking at it.

Installing various classes of antivirus / spyware / security suits won’t even solve the instant problem.

Please refer the Microsoft Support Article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545) with regard to recovery of corrupted registry.

If you feel any difficulty while executing the steps as enumerated inside the above referred URL, please do perform the following:

Backup the entire useful data;
If you’re either using Windows XP or Vista, try System Restore Point to recover your earlier system settings;
If the above mentioned operation fails, perform a complete fresh installation of operating system as advised by H2O Snake.

I'd personally just say a reformat, but I'm assuming she'd want to try some things before having to do this. If there is any virus-related items on her hard drive, then Nod32 will be sure to find it.

But just remember, if all else fails, reformat and be happy.

Well, find a copy of Windows XP/Vista and obtain a corporate key XD

But yea, you can grab the Nod32 "trial" for 30days, which is the full version, just trial limitted to 30days.

And, if she doesn't have her installation disk, you will need either that or a Windows install disk.

Spybot should be totally free and i know there is a free version of Ad-aware. But its kinda pointless to try to run those now if it has become that bad infected. My suggestion would be to use your computer to clean the drive. You need to of course setup your computer to be up-to-date with all the latest definitions from either Norton or Mcafee. Then install and use spybot and adaware. Then hook up the infected drive and start the cleaning process. By hooking it up i mean slave it to your master drive. You want to make sure your cpu is protected heavily before doing this or you will have 2 infected drives. If you end up reformatting, there are ways of getting some corp keys for any OS you need.

Hey Sarah. I would say that your best bet would to be backing up the files that you need but scanning them before you do so, then erasing your friends entire computer and putting the files back on it. Honestly that is the best thing to do with a problem like that. After that your computer should run smooth and fast. :)
