Hi everybody, Could anybody give me some tips on Sniping? I am no good at it.
Every time I try to snipe, I always get shot down.

The only thing I can suggest (since I am trying to get better at it myself) is to find a really good hiding place. Then, be patient, you don't want to shoot and miss, that just gives away your position. I have found that the M21 is great for sniping. Any of the sniping guns in the beginning are great. Take advantage of the "breath holding" button (left joystick, hold down). Really, that is all I have for now. Good luck. Everything takes practice to be good at it.

Personally, I wouldn't hide in one place. =] But I guess it depends on the game type.
When I snipe I move around as much as possiable, and try not to go to the "usual" sniping spots. Especially move after you've fired a couple of shots (in non hardcore modes) cause it'll show you to the other players on the little map in the corner.
Try headquarters. Cause people tend to run in the same direction (mainly to capture the next hq) so it'd be easier to snipe them then, cause your less likely to have stragglers that run about like nutters.

I got a few tips and tricks for you:)
1. Never stay in one position, after you kill somebody, move to another position.
2. Try and keep as unnoticved as you can, hide behind objects, lie down, crouch, keep camouflaged against your surroundings.
3. Don't hold your breath until you can see someone your target, this case you dont run out of breath as soon as you spot someone.
4. Always keep a full clip, you could get rushes, its better to have a full clip than 1 bullet.
5. No scoping trick, when your no scoping, keep your crosshair at roughly head height, then before you shoot, strafe left or right, stop, you will notice that your cross hair contracts for a split second, shoot!
Hope this helped:)
P.S. Sorry for my spelling mistakes, i just woke up.

What I've learned so far is definately be patient, don't give yourself away right away. I agree with Violet on finding unusual spots to go, there are certain spots where everyone looks for a sniper. After a few shots and/or a kill, MOVE. A lot of times, people will send a decoy out for you to shoot so they can see the angle from which the bullets come from. Overkill is a great perk too, to keep from going up against, say, an AK47 with your lil pistol. Claymore your butt. I like to lay on one. Then even if I'm discovered usually they're so excited to be able to run up and knife me, they kill themselves in the process. If it's a moving target, be sure to lead them just a fraction of an inch so the difference between your trigger pull and your shot is made up for. For a stationary target, if they're poiting towards you, take the shot. You might be able to hit them before they hit you. If they're facing a different direction, take the extra time to line up your shot. Um, that's all I can think of right now...

Use prone!! I cannot stress that enuff prone will save your life lol. Also I only really use bolt action sniper rifles, they are much more accurate then a semi auto. They have very low recoil and you will get a kill shot everytime. I use irion lungs and stoppin power, it gives you that extra breath and that extra bullet damage to make sure when you shoot him he is down. It works really well against people with juggernaut. Dont stay in the same play, move around like they said already. Try sniping in spots where you normally wouldnt.
Make sure you have some sort of cover, even if your shooting behind a car and using the car for cover its better then crouchin or standing there tryin to shoot. Also you have to be really pacient, yes sometimes the games glitches out and you know you shot a guy in the head and it wont register. Also for your first perk if you are gunna snipe in one spot for more then 2 kills i suggest using claymores. Set them up in the door ways or around corners to try and get those dudes sneakin up on you. Dont make it obvious try to hid them a lil further back from the doors so when they come threw and they could be running they will get caught with the explosion.
That is pretty much all I can think of I have all sniper challenges finished, I used all of those things and I flew threw the challenges. I know this is alot to read but it will really help you alot. If you have anymore questions or anything about any maps let me know I am sure I can help you out.

I think if you want to improve with sniping is go boost for a while with a friend getting him to run about and stuff but you need to be patient. Then try really crazy spots to snipe from( i snipe in the middle of the road and the enemy are like wtf ? ) joke dont try that unless you want a death wish. BUt just try and find what your comfortable with and remember not everyone is good at sniping. What i mean is that not every can snipe but that doesnt mean you bad it just means you are probably better off with a different weapon. What thugqueen said above is true and i agree completely however i still believe the .50 cal is better than the bolt action sniper rifles.

a lot of these suggestions are good but i hardly follow most of the general "sniping rules" and i pride myself in my sniping ability. if your good enough and fast enough at it, you can and should be able to stay in one spot. in fact i like it that way because after you start picking off the team they realize they need to take you out, and start focusing on you, not only does that give your team a small advantage, it can give you more kills. like on bog for example, i always camp middle hill. just popping up and down to look at the area, picking off other snipers who camp in back spawn.
at first i use the M40, M21 sometimes if it's hardcore, i dont recommend using the semi unless it's hardcore. then the .50 cal when i get to that level. claymores, i can't stress enough how usefull claymores are, i have them on all my classes. stopping power and extreme conditioning. stopping power for those shoot in the leg and kill them moments, and extremem conditioning gives you an early edge on the start of the game, get to your spot before they even get out of the spawn, enabling you to pick more people off asap. i used to use iron lungs but as long as you dont over use the breath you dont need it. and i wouldnt use overkill unless it's hardcore, if you aren't good with the pistol you will get better, you really just need stopping power unless your using the .50 cal.
as far as sniping areas, wherever you think is comfortable, and where you think you can get kills. i honestly hate spawning and moving to a spot and just waiting for them, i usually try to go around behind and pick them off. i also rather like sniping at the usual spots, like i said with the bog example, if they know where you are they come for you and you can practice getting faster that way as well.
with the leading, it's really hard to have a definite area in which to lead because each room has it's lag, etc. with the first person you try sniping in the game just focus mainly on how far away you have to lead, and learn from that.
i also dont strive for headshots, if they aren't moving and i know they aren't going to move any time soon then sure i'll go for it. but otherwise it's just body shots for me, for a learner i think that's also the best way, just go for the kill until your confident enough with your sniping to go for the heads.
uh i think that's it but um yeah ha..
H2O Hamlet

Aim for the Head. Shoot.
That's pretty much what I do, work's like a Charm :)
But, I'm not soo sure about the moving around part. If you're in a good location, you can take anyone out. You just have to be good enough to shoot in your peripheral. If you see someone, they need to die. Especially if they are a sniper. Because staying in the same location does give you away a bit, but if you kill them it doesn't matter.
Also, when I'm no holding my breathe, I work the cross-hair movement. Meaning when it goes up, I slightly press down, and when it goes down I slightly press up. It keeps it steady. I usually snipe kneeling, is that Prone? I think that's what it's called. Try to only show your head. The less they have to shoot at, the better. If they make a hasty shot and miss, they'll show their location to you and than it's your turn.
Secondly... people do this all the time and it frustrates me. If you are getting shot, and you notice your guy move or go red... please move. Don't stay there anymore. Someone obviously has their cross hairs on that same location waiting for you to show up again. Just go a little ways somewhere else and snipe from there. I don't understand why people get shot and stay there, inevitably dieing.
Um... yea other than that practice makes skill. You have to just learn how to quickly aim at their head or chest and shoot. Fast reflexs and accuracy is essential to being a talented sniper. A lot of people snipe, but the really good ones have that reflex ability that others don't.
Also, I would also recommend using the M40A3. That is my favorite sniper, and it's pretty accurate. Only... lately it's been crud for me, not entirely bad but I think it's cause I was playing on a European Server so I was lagging. But, it's bolt action and I highly recommend it. I like the 50 cal, but not entirely. I would use it 2nd to the bolt action, because automatics tend to get more inaccurate as you miss.
Also, lay down when you reload. No point showing your body in the open if you aren't going to shoot.
Also, learn where other hot spots are, and where they come out from their spawn. Look down those alleys and shoot them as they exit. I also recommend playing a lot of the game without zooming in. Just sit back and use your peripheral vision to see the map. Once you see movement zoom in and go for the kill. Again, you'll need to have quick reflex's but if you got em it help.
So... yea I just wrote a lot. Most of it was repetitive. Really all I can say is you have to practice to get better. Learn what other snipers do. You'll notice where they are when they kill you, or you can try to shoot them and miss. Just do what they did next round. And see how it works for you. But the main thing is, you can't give up. If you want to be good with it, you have to keep with it.
I could show you better in-game than explain it. But good luck.

I have noticed that there is a need to lead a moving target on this game too. the further off the target the more it matters.
H2O Hamlet
04-27-2008, 02:58 PM
True, but it's only slightly. I'd say half an inch lead is good enough at long distance. Like on Crossfire, lead with about .5 in and you'll hit them as they are running. That is just a key for you. Crossfire is a pretty length map, and so aiming down that full length road takes .5 in. Most maps will be .5in, I rarely have to use 1in, if ever. Even if they are close, I always take their leading shoulder. Meaning if they are close range, and moving left, I'll aim for the front most part of their body. This is true of all guns. That way all the bullets go from their left to their right as they move into it.
(shoot here)(body)(open space)
<-- Running this way

Lol hope that helps. The diagram above is more for guns, not so much a sniper lol.

i read what thug queen said and i am already pretty good at sniping but after i read it and nao what sky walker added i just went 41 and 3 on bog in team death match and 32 and 2 (those are kills to deaths) on ambush and all i did was sat some where till i lost confort with the constant barrage of bullets hitting me from multiple directions so i chose a spot where i could see my old one and long behold everyone on there team wanted to use my spot or look if i was still there and i died by a lucky guess and another team mate dodged a few bullets leaving me behind em .-. but good luck with snipin :D

Yeah I do have to dissagree with some stuff the guys said up above. I dont think that overkill is a very good perk to match with sniping. you need stopping power if your using a a rifle besides the 50 cal. I think its a good perk but not for sniping. thats just what I think. but yea its fun when your in a party and you have a friend or friends to snipe with. me and capone would snipe almost everygame that we played together and we could do awesome as a team. we would ALWAYS and i do mean always be 1 and 2 on your team.

Overkill is only good in Hardcore.
I second this.
I only use overkill for hardcore. Having stopping power is essential for dropping them in one hit for regular matches.
Just some food for though. Me, Viral, and Daveroo all sniped together on bog. We did tactical, just the 3 of us. Snipers for us only, the other team used everything, literally. We went 27-1 29-6 and 24-7... We didn't move, we sat in the same spots. Than again I consider the 3 of us to be very good snipers, and I must say Viral would be the better of us 3.
You just have to know what you're doing.
Also something to note. You can't do anything without a good team. And I mean that very much so. If you have a team that is not discipline and runs around... you will die. You will get flanked because people are leaving gaps and openings/weak spots, you will swap spawns and you'll be in the hot zone. So much goes wrong when you have a team that just does whatever. You need to play with people that know what they are doing. That way you don't have to worry about getting knifed or shot from the side. You look down one way and you kill. All snipers should only worry about that.
I personally get aggravated when my team just rushes and the spawns go haywire. Granted I'll still get kills, and I'll be 4-5+ Kill/Death Ratio... but it's still a pain when you get killed from behind because someone pushed to far or no one checked the far left side.
Get a good team, work on your reflexes and peripheral... aim true and shoot.

I'm very good at sniping in CoD. First things first. Make sure your controller is on a comfortable setting to snipe on, not to fast so that your having trouble keeping your cross hairs on the target. Second is finding your weapon of choice, if you have unlocked the 50 I strongly suggest using it. Next thing (which I hate) is finding the right position when sniping. Obviously prone is the most stable position to shoot from and the smallest target visible by an enemy. Find the Right position which you have an open view and concealment. Also to ensure rear security is provided set claymores up on any additional entrances to your position this way you don't have to worry about confrontations from behind, and can focus on the targets in the distance. If you need help or any advice with CoD or any other game just message me either on here or Xbox Live. Gamertag is CLOUD STR1FE.

Yeah the stuff in team tactical was intense. The second part is the main reason I am a strong sniper, if I played with randoms i'd have to try that harder to be like how I am when I play with the H2O's.
But yeah if your confident enough, stay in the same spot and try anticipate what the enemies are going to do and get to the right spot. Also if you find a good spot to go, live at that spot, sure the other team may call you a camper, but hey your the one winning right? :mvboogie:

Putting camo on your gun ruins your ability to blend in if you're wearing a ghillie suit, of course, that doesn't affect me.

hiding wise there are actually a lot of stupid palces the work sometimes in some maps u can jsut lay right in the midle of the ground u gotta go where people rarely do and never shoot more than twice from the same spot kepp moving around
also contrary to wat everyone says the best sniper to use is the M4AO1 its is the most powerful and most accurate but most people will go on and on about the 50 cal which really isnt that great

i agree, use the M40A3, at least at first because it has reasonable power and good accuracy, the 50. is powerful but has loads of recoil =[ stick to bolt action unless its hardcore, then i'd use the M21 or the Draganov. and like people have said, don't have 2 claymores unless your guna camp, keep active and use bandolier, unless in harcore. lol, yea, and they're a dead give-away when you're sniping.......I don't think I want the golden Dragunov on that note....I'll stick with my R700 & .50cal snipers......
R700 > M40A3 based on power
M40A3 > R700 based on accuracy
M40A3 > R700 based on capacity
if capacity doesn't matter, then R700 > M40A3

With all do respect, the 50. cal is the worst. In hardcore. The sound it makes when shot is way to loud, you don't need all that power and noise to kill in S&D.
R700, M40A3, or the Dragon are equally quiet.
The m21 is only useful for assault sniping. >_<

i use the 50. regardless of what im playing. it's the sound that makes it the best sniper IMO. as well as it's just faster and more accurate when im using. statistically it isn't, but in my hands it is :P

it all depends on the sniper. If you see someone take the time to hold your breath. im a good sniper and sometimes if your in a fortified place you can distract multiple enemies and give easy kills to your teamates. If you are playing hardcore with a semiautomatic sniper, aim for the chest, even when holding your breath any semiauto can miss a perfect headshot

Im Normally In Prone Or Knelt :D
Sometimes if i have an object in front of me i look over it to see if anyone is moving. Go back behind it then if i noticed someone go back over it and snipe them. The one thing i make sure i do after i have sniped someone is move to a different spot. This is most important otherwise after you kill 1 or 2 people they just pick you off.
That's what i do .. also it depends on what map and game mode you are in.
BTW the sniper i prefer to use is the M40A3 Bolt Action :D I Have got red tiger for it in every prestige i guess i just have the nack with that sniper. ;)
R700 = Bad Recoil.
50 cal = Just don't like it.
Dragunov = Not bad but never use it.
M21 = Ok, good for shooting over and over again lol. So if you miss you get a quick second chance.
When i get to the last prestige i know i will have to use all of these to get the golden Dragunov but when that time comes ill be ready. LMAO.

a tip that i learnt was that instead of carrying overkill find a partner thats willing to put alot of time into private matches with yourself and just practice noscoping eachother thats what me and an old member used to do everday for hours on end and i found it very handy especially if u take bandolier stopping power and steady aim. try this out dont get stressed out straight away if it doesnt go to plan at first it took us at least 5 or 6 days till we started getting really good at it, practice makes perfect remember this.
I use stopping power and deep impact. I make sure to claymore areas around me. Usually entrences. I will usually have one by a door at an angle, and then one farther towards me, as a back up. Both usually get stepped on, because everyone wants to rush to the sniper and get that kill. hide claymores around a corner, so people in doorways cant see them, and put it so they are slightly facing away from the door, because you want the claymore to blow up not where they were, but where they are going to be when it gets tripped (what direction they will travel). I like to go mostly body shots, especially in the distance. With a bolt action, you dont have to be as acurate, and with stopping power, you can be more likely to drop them in that one body shot. Heck, if not, the bolts arnt too slow that you cant get that next kill. If someone rushes you, just spray that pistol without zooming. I rarely zoom with pistol, and rarely use pistol. When I zoom is when they are in the distance, and also when they are running past me and dont see me. As long as you "halo jump" around and randomly lay down and spray with pistol, you can beat people with assault rifles. When I am going against another sniper, I will often either go for headshots, or body shots through a wall. It gives me a bigger target then they have on me, and I know I can drop them like that too. Many players online will hesitate after you shoot them. Either due to wanting to get the shot back at you, off sync, or slow reflexes. Just time it and you will have them. Hold, aim, shoot, release, quickly hold and aim again, shoot. I do this because I dont use the iron long perk and running out of breath sucks.
Hey COD4 division, please go to your recruitment area and read posts by me and recruits, and athena has posted too. Thank you.

sniping? well just to prove a point i havnt used or fired another gun on CoD 4 apart from a sniper....but thats not helpfull so heres some advice a sniper generally kills from long range right? so kill from long range sit at the back and provide support fire for your team. now the leed? no more than 1 mil ( amil is one of the lines on the X axis of the sniper scope when zoomed in ) on the biggest maps. the area is important not just your positioning but what your line of sight is like whats the point of being expertly hidden if you cant see anything? you need to now the map your playing and now where the main combat ares are and where you can see them without reveling yourself. moving after each sot isnt recommened maybe after 4-5 shots then move or if you see an enemy look right at you MOVE because chanes are he seen you and plus its better safe than sorry right? perks and equipment are vital i use a M40A3 rifle with dessert eagle side arm and 2x claymore stopping power and iron lungs i also have a varient which includes an acog scope but ill get onto that in aminute the rifle? it all depends on what yor comfortable with theres no point using a gun you dont like is there? Bolt action rifles are more acurate and do slightly more damage but have slow rates of fire and semi auto sniper rifles are less accurate but have a higher rate of fire also they do less damage than bolt action with exception of the beret. now the scopes the ordinary scope is better for more long range slow kills but if yyour good it is very good at medium to close rnage the ACOG scope is good for medium to close range and is alot faster to aim so use it for smaller maps. i think thats all? i didnt mean to send half of you to sleep whilst reading this but i hope it helps : ) if you dont understand a part of this feel free to send me a friend request over xbox live along with a message and ill happily sit down and talk you through parts you dont unerstand my gamer tag is Dex 52 hoped this helped you guys

a tip that i learnt was that instead of carrying overkill find a partner thats willing to put alot of time into private matches with yourself and just practice noscoping eachother thats what me and an old member used to do everday for hours on end and i found it very handy especially if u take bandolier stopping power and steady aim. try this out dont get stressed out straight away if it doesnt go to plan at first it took us at least 5 or 6 days till we started getting really good at it, practice makes perfect remember this.
one thing about no scoping, unless you are running around with a sniper it wont help much. When you are sniping, when someone kills you, its usually a sniper or from behind, so there isnt much you can do. My suggestion is to use the deagle if you have it and get good with it, and just listen for footsteps and be prepared when it comes.
----Double Post Merged----
P.S. all of the sniper recommendations dont matter, use all of them and find one you like. If you are dead accurate then use a bolt action, they arent as forgiving but wont miss good aimed shots. Semi-autos are more forgiving, but you will need to hold your breath for more diffiicult shots, or you will miss often.

After reading all of these I should never ever ever be allowed to use a sniper rifle, lol. But you'll hear me say that a lot :)

lol it doesnt matter it all takes practice ive been gaming for 5 years now and ive loved being a sniper so much but to get as good as i am takes alot of practice i mean think about all the MLG snipers there real good and theyve probaly been gaming for god nows how long it all comes down to the person some people dont like hididng in abush a gizilion miles away from the battle for 8 minutes to get 1 kill but i love it i play Battle field 2 MC sometimes and i just sit in ahedge for 20mins waiting for one kill where as alot of the otheer people prefer just to run in my advice would be to find something ur good at in all games and stick to it : )

..............in need of a period, Dex? lol, anyway, sniping with a .50 is fun. Sniping someone with Juggernaut with a .50 and watch them die with one shot is even more fun......shooting the same guy twice in the head and he kills you equals bullshit.......

I still think it's bullshit, especially since people don't die from one hit with a .50. Do you really think you're going to get up and say "Hey, guys! Nice shot!!" after gettin' hit with a .50?

Hahaha, wow, you've already gotten PLENTY of great advice. But i'll add my 2 cents since i'm here. Stay hidden, take your time, only fire when you've got the shot, move after every few kills. If you don't have iron lungs then don't hold your breath until you've got them in your sights.
I had a hard time sniping at first too, but its tons of fun.

If your doing HC (which I prefer) use the M21, faster firing rate 1 shot kills with the lowest recoil, People seem to always use the Barret in standard games but I favor the R700 w/ stopping power. If you can get use the sniping without holding your breath use extreme conditioning with stopping power (well that's what I use in non hardcore games) my basic plan is rush to a spot. Snipe. Then run to a spot the overlooks your previous spot. Most likely the enemy is going to check the area where you last killed him from. Also get good with the pistol, desert eagle is good but the one you get before that works great to when you learn to aim for the head as for the desert eagle can't be equipped with a silencer. always watch your back don't always depend on breath control and learn to use a pistol wisley
