Oh wow, that is a tough question. I don't know if I can choose a "best all time game."
There are so many different genre's and the date at which it came out has a huge impact as well. I'll go down my list:
First Person Shooters (Older): 007 Golden Eye
This game is an all time favorite. It was amazing, the campaign mode was fun. I mean, how many of you enjoyed falling down from the pipes up top into the bathroom to see a guy below you taking a... well you know. And you pop him in the head haha. For the time this came out, a few years back on the N64, this game definitely dominated the rest. I was fond of Metal Gear as well, but James Bond definitely caught my attention.
First Person Shooter (Present): I'd have to say Battlefield 2 Modern Combat
This game has it all. It has multiple classes, vehicles, HUGE maps to use the vehicles and different classes. It has every game type needed. And best of all it has its OWN CLAN SUPPORT SYSTEM. No need for Gamebattles; they have their own clan rosters and clan ladders. As well as individual rankings for class (such as sniper ranking, assault ranking, etc). I'm more of a gamer that likes reality games. I know Halo is HUGE, and I respect it. I love the campaign mode in Halo, one of my favorites all time, but online wise I'm not a big fan. It is too unrealistic for me, but that is just my opinion. I like games like CoD, GRAW (although unrealistic at times), Battlefield, Rainbow 6, etc. Anyways back to battlefield, it's a great game and I can't wait until Battlefield Bad Company. 90% destructible terrain?!
Role Playing Games: WoW
From what I've heard and read about this game, It seems amazing. If I had money to pay for it monthly I'd definitely start playing. But, seeing as I will be going to college soon, I'll need all the money I can scrounge together.
Fun Disney Games: Kingdom Hearts
I really wish this was for XBOX, but it was made by Sony and so... Sony will have it on the PS... which I don't have. I have yet the play the 2nd Kingdom hearts, but I spend hours upon hours on the first playing at the coliseum and getting my Ultimate Key. This game was amazing, and since I love Disney anyways... I go like Monthly, this game was huge for me.
Racing Games: Mario Kart
Obviously Right? I know this doesn't fall into my whole "reality" mix, but it's Mario... How can you not like this game? "Ima a Wario, Ima gonna win" "Yoshiiiii" haha.
That's all I have time for. I have to head off to class. But do you understand where I was getting at? Maybe other people will have an easier time finding a single "all time favorite/best" game. But I have a hard time distinguishing between genre's.

I really wish I wasn't in such a rush right now so I could sit and type out why I feel this way, but for me, hands down, the best game is Metal Gear Solid. I mean, characters and storyline alone are spectacular.

I would have to go with Resident Evil. I thought this game was a brilliant idea. I was hooked from the beginning. It is a very challenging game so unlike alot of shoot'em up type games this one took brains as well. I love the mixture of zombies, blood, and logic :) I would also have to give Doom some props as well, I mean come on people it only opened up pc fps for all the games we see today! Also a challenging game as well, with all the secrets involved. I play the first on to this day :) As far as roleplaying Final Fantasy takes the cake. These are just a few of my favs

Wow best game ever? man I don't know. To me it would probably be legend of zelda: ocarina of time on n64. loved this game. I am also a big fan of chrono trigger on the snes and final fantasy 7. The best fps was hands down goldeneye back on the n64

I'm going to have to go with the Sims. I'm all for simulation and social interaction in video games, and Sim is the game for that. Now allowing you to have children, watch them grow up, Get old and go to school. Allows your sims to work, meet goals, fall in love. I'm a def. fan of games with a love story ahem which is why Final fantasy series would fall second. It's just an overall fun game and now it's a popular game to make movies and music videos with.
The Sims Series FTW

Monkey Island 2: LeChucks Revenge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Island_2:_LeChuck%27s_Revenge)
Or any game based off the SCUMM engine for that matter.
That's it. Contest over.
Thank you.

If Gran Turismo 5 (which will come out in 2010) lives up to the hype, it's going to be a monument in video game history.
Otherwise, Starcraft, I guess.

Hmm... I really really can't decide what my favorite game of all time is. It's an extremely close tie between FF7, Socom II, and Ninja Gaiden Black. I've put far more dedication and time into those games than anything else I have ever played.

Off line shooters I would go with PMS Slaughter and say Resident Evil my all time favorite being code veronica x. On line shoter you cant beat socom. With socom 2 having my favorite maps and needing a little more skill to kill.

My vote has to goto Indigo Prophecy. I played this through and, even though I was interacting with the game, it seemed like I was watching a movie play. I thought it was extremely well thought out and designed, the voice acting is great, and the controls are simple to comprehend, but like any great game, hard to master.

I will say a cross between Wolf3D and Doom. Both were influential to the start of FPS. I have got to respect the origins of FPS.

This is tough for me, If I was basing this decision off of groundbreaking games, this would be my list-
-Pong
-Super Mario (NES)
-Wolfenstein (PC) - (goldeneye wouldn't exist if it weren't for this)
-Legend of Zelda (NES) - first game to let you SAVE
but, as my all time favorites..
1- Mario series up until N64 (that's my childhood right there)
2- Donkey Kong Country
3- Goldeneye 007
4- Halo Series
5- Gears of War
6- Ninja Gaiden
7- Oblivion
8- Zelda - Ocarina of Time
*edit* HOW COULD I FORGET! Kingdom Hearts (PS2) love that game.
