never thought id say a game is to big for a blu ray disc but it seems that straight out of the gate mgs4 is to big for a 50 gb blu ray disc, so they had to come up with a compersion software built into the game

Nice?

I don't really know what to say to that. Maybe HD DVD would have been better?

-edit

nevermind HD DVD can't hold it either, i guess it's time for us all to move on to holo dvd or whatever it's called. I heard it can hold more than most hard drives today.

Amen to that. 50GB is way too freakin big anyways rofl.

What are they trying to put on there? a self-sustaining OS with hundreds of capabilities or something?

No they are trying to well put all the textures on the disk without any compression and while it should work it does not plus people that code for the ps3 just use more space because they can not because they should there are games on the ps3 that you have to install 3 GB worth of data and the xbox version you just pop in same experience with out the lag

Yeah i guess, they should just start selling games in solid state. Like external hard drives or something. It would be around the same price as they want to retail it for anyways wouldn't it. like $100US.

solid state is a bad idea at this point its gonna cost alot more,

and no one needs to use this much room its crazy,

flight simulator x has detailed maps of the world and its only 15 gb

hey repeating the same data many times so the long access times of Blueray wont be an issue.
***BRx2 in PS3 has access times excessing 350ms.***

Every laser jump for data have serious delays.
You need smart cashing (takes memory!) or instalation on HDD.
OR you repeat data so laser position doesn't change and drive in PS3 doesn't need to spin up /spin down to keep 2x spped (BR in PS3 is CVL - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant_linear_velocity )

So to not to have nessessary MANDATORY install (think 5GB in Hot Shot Golf 5, Lost Planet , Devil May Cry) basic data will be repated for every level.

first off, where's your source? posting something like this without a source just makes it invalid.

second, when did it become a bad thing to have lots of things in a game? "50 gb is terrible, too much information we dont need that, etc etc" who cares? honestly, why do gamers care how much info is on there, as long as it looks good, plays good, and has tons of content what's the difference. ugh people p me off.

Its not just the MGS4 game thats on the disc, theres Metal Gear Online on there too. Pre-order now though and you'll get a lot of extras.

Check this out MGS4 Release (http://ninjitstu.wordpress.com/2008/03/02/mgs4-released-12th-june-worldwide/)

I'm a 100% sure that all that is for videos, gameplay will be like 3 hours but with cinemas we will have a 10 hour long game :P

I'm late with this, but you may have missed it. In an interview with Famitsu magazine, father of Metal Gear, Hideo Kojima, has apparently claimed that Blu-ray does not offer sufficent storage capacity for MGS4.

"There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress," he laughed, impressing an internet full of gigabyte geeks who think, "hey it must be amazing if it's so big it won't fit on a 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc!" and not, the more accurate, "oh dear god, that means days of cut-scenes!" or the less charitable, "oh shut up and just release the damn thing."

Data bloat does not necessarily equal quality.

MGS4 will be hitting the shelves, complete with its beta of Metal Gear Online, on June 12.

I agree. Here: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2008/03/03/kojima_drops_hype_bomb_mgs4_too_big_for_bluray.htm l

Konami is obviously trying to put a knock-off GTAIV in there. What else could explain the 50gb+ usage? lol
