I usually read g4 and today they put in an article about Hardcore gaming. Several times they said things that suggest that todays games are to complex for girls and only guys can be hardcore gamers.... I think that is one of the problem g4 is pretty respectable in the gaming community and to have an article like this... I think that it is sick that even the people at g4 are sexist.....well what do you think heres the article http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/683070/Casual_vs_Hardcore_Games.html#readmore

I don't see games as too complex for girls at all, just that girls in general aren't too into the content that most games have to offer. Games like Fable 2 that allow you to play as a female is a step in the right direction. It is always refreshing to meet a girl-gamer along with games being taken seriously in general.
Check out this video shown on ESPN for Halo 3: http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?&brand=null&videoId=3253039&n8pe6c=1

That's one of the worst things that comes from it. I miss the good old days of X-Play, G4tv.com , old AotS, JUDGEMENT DAY, Filter, Electric Playground... you know, shows about gaming.

Is G4 living in a hole or something??!! I think the guy that wrote that hates getting pwn'd by girls. Not only did he diss female gamers, but didn't even ACKNOWLEDGE hardcore girl gamers. LOOK AT THE PMS CLAN!! That's just an example of the hardcore girl gamers out there. I'd love to see that guy's gamerscore. I could find tons of girls on here with a higher one than he has.
GRR!!
and i have to post a comment I read from that article from "meateroid"
"Once again I call Bullsheet.
For the record my wife is in her mid 20's and could prolly kick the sheet outa some "hardcore" dudes' arses on Halo 3.
And as far as hardcore games go WTF? Since when did GTA become hardcore? I've prolly said this like a million times, but GTA sucks donkey. When little kids are just cruzin around and running over people or killing prosties. Thats not exactlly hardcore.
I remember a time when the (and still now) when the NES was the original hardcore system.
I'd like to see anybody try to beat Castlevania (original) from begining to end without wanting to cry out in agony.
Anyhow, this whole hardcore v. Casual thing is getting tired. Who really gives a rats A. I mean as long as I can still smoke you jokers in Halo or COD4 then who really cares if some 40 yearold is playing SuperPaper Mario.
At least we have a growing industry instead of a dying one. (egghmm *film and tv*) "

Lmao. Well, maybe for you Kahlo.... ;) jk
That article is a bunch of crap. There's plenty of girls out there that can kick my butt in games. And G4 not showing that much about gaming anymore was bound to happen. Look at MTV. Music Television. Except for some videos in the morning, where's the "music"?

I believe more girlz can be hardcore gamers. Itz just that they're not enough participants.
In the Soul Calibur scene I heard about one French girl who plays exceptionally good. I admit I was surprised not only because she's good but because of the amount of dedication she put into this game and that's a good thing.

Ya really... The reality I see is that nowadays the number of guyz playing video games is at a much larger margin than the number of female participants. If you see the trailer of Nintendo convention center, Regis mentions that the number of female players playing Wii are roughly a third of what men play.
I've seen vids of the fighting scene and most of them I see are men.
I've also been on other forums and there are more guyz than female participants.
But let's get this straight I don't see video games as a male's game, but a game for any gender.

I agree that it is for any gender, but I would say it is probably at 85% male and 15% female, which sucks.

Well obviouslty girls can't be hardcore gamers! They're too busy doing laundry, and cleaning the house, and taking care of the bay, and cooking to have time for that. Plus, we all know girls aren't smart enough too! And we're in the 18th Century, and Donald Duck just married my cousin!!!

The thing is... reading the article I sense that this guy just doesn't know what he's talking about at all.
First thing would be calling GTA "hardcore". What defines hardcore for him? Because GTA is pretty much a game that anyone could pick up, and frankly a game that a lot of females can spend hours playing as well, even thought he claims we're too stupid to be able to follow the growing industry (*sigh*). Also Super Mario Galaxy, a fairly "simple" game that most people could pick up and have no problem playing.
Also, this made me laugh/cry a little: "we aren’t complaining about Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3, but good original games are what bring new players into the gaming audience." Maybe he should check the number of how many people bought a Xbox 360 to be able to play these two games he mentioned. I'd bet he wouldn't care though, he's seems like the guy who THINKS he knows what he's talking about and will drag some lameass constructed comment out of his behind to try and blow it off. (For the record, I know about 10-15 people who bought a X360 to be able to play Halo 3).
And frankly I don't see the reason behind his article. He just lists a lot of "facts" that most gamers already are pretty aware of, and some "facts" that are just not true. I'd also like to see him get his facts straight and maybe added some info about the DS and how much it has sold, and still keeps selling in the world today.
"One is that casual gamers tend to buy one or two games and play them for a long time, while the core gaming audience purchases many, many more." That sentence alone would state that I'm hardcore. But I don't agree with him. People that play ie. Final Fantasy (a single player, NON social game) for hours and hours (I know I could spend 60-150 hours beating a game when I used to play them) is just as hardcore in my opinion as someone using about 20 hours a week to play Halo 3.
And I'd like to know where he's getting his "fact" from... "So far, no game has managed to captivate the audience that plays The Sims with a new franchise." What sort of fact is that? Where'd he get that info? And for information, I know a lot of girls that played the Sims that like the DS / Wii ie. or has even moved on to more.... "hardcore" games (in his opinion).

I'm sorry but I really don't agree. I read that entire article top to bottom and the only statement I found that would be arguably sexist was "Ask most girls in their mid twenties, and they’ll tell you they loved Super Mario Brothers 3 or Bubble Bobble. It was a simpler time, when games were primarily marketed to children, and they were easy enough that your sister could jump in for a few hours and not be intimidated."
Which I am not even going to throw myself into a debate on whether that could or could not be sexist because it really had nothing to do with the article itself which was actually pretty much about how casual games could be taking over the market blah blah blah. Never once did I see the article mention anything about how video games are for only for guys and too complex for girls or anything along those lines. I'm not trying to start an arguement or anything but rather trying to point out that there is a distinct possibility you might be slightly overreacting just a wee bit...

Let's seeee...
The sentence you quoted yourself:
It was a simpler time, when games were primarily marketed to children, and they were easy enough that your sister could jump in for a few hours and not be intimidated.
Then he goes on about how it got harder and more difficult, and you don't have to be overacting to read between those lines.
He also keeps mentioning gamers as boys and men throughout the article.
Rock Band is especially accessible, as hard and expert guitar and drums will provide a challenge to most avid gamers, while you can also usually get just about any girl at a party to pick up the mic and sing a few songs.
Already somewhat aggregated by the first sentence, this is what I read: Basically stating that generally girls will only try the singing because it doesn't take the same practice as playing the guitar ie.
they have been releasing downloadable songs from bands like The Police and The Ramones that appeal to an older audience, while also unleashing the occasional chick rock track for the ladies.
Rock music is one of the few things in the world that has almost nothing to do with gender, and this guy is still able to spew out a comment like that?

Girls can't be hardcore? Who's been kicking my ass this entire time? Who's been right beside me sniping (Rachel, you've been MIA lately)? And who likes playing Gaylo over Call of Booty (Ky)?
l have no idea, if girls can't be hardcore. l guess it's some magical ghost playing COD4 disguised as a female magically kicking my ass. Yep, that makes sense......

Anyone who would class Gears as mature and complex can't be very bright and indeed needs to be sat down and repeatedly slapped in the face with a copy of Silent Hill 2
Anyway, its its true that in general there's nothing stopping a women from becoming a hordcore gamer, until you take in to account the attitude of a lot of people, there's still this myth that games are purely a male past time, which seems to be the main reason why this myth exists in the first place. Of course as more women play, more people will accept it, as more accept it, more will play

I must say, it's guys like him that make it difficult for some girls to become "hardcore gamers".He's the kind of guy that harasses a girl when he hears her say something in matchmaking(or joining a server in CS, that was the worst). It happens all too often to me. Sometimes enough to make me quit playing. But not all guys are like that. Most are impressed by girls playing.
What makes someone a "hardcore gamer" anyways? I play games all the time, 5+ hours a night, all day on my days off. Does that qualify me for the title of "hardcore"? I kick ass on Halo, maybe that will get me qualified?I've played numerous games, especially RPGs, maybe putting 100+ hours into one game will get me a hardcore badge or something. I know of plenty of "hardcore" chicks, and we just happen to be on a website full of them. Sure there might not be too many in the world, but that's all the more reason to appreciate the ones that are there. Not all girls are the same, however hard that might be for some people to comprehend.

Ok I couldn't read everyones comments unfortunately but I'm sure we all agree that is a complete lie. I'm just surprised that G4 said that. It's funny because I have an interview with G4 next month... haha Wonder if I should mention that when talking to them? lol Yeah I'm more hardcore then 75% of my guy friends. I play games roughly 60-80 hours a week and compete nationally. If that's not hardcore then I don't know what is. I do more than just play Viva Pinata too (although I love that game... lol) I play Halo 3, COD4, Quake 4, Mass effect, Final Fantasy, guitar Hero, Rock Band and many more and am competitive with Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band. Whoever wrote that is sexist and needs to be fired from G4. That's going to give them a bad reputation.... I wonder what Morgan Webb thought about that too. hmmm
