View Full Version : Never trade in?

So I know quite a few people that like to trade in games after they have played them so much, gotten all the achievements, beaten the Single player on every difficulty, annihilated the multiplayer, and are now completely bored with it. But there are always the few games that never seem to be traded in. So which games are those to you? I for one will probably never trade in my Devil May Cry PS2 Set, plus DMC 4 CE for 360 when I have it, all of my Halo Games, and EDF for 360 :D

I don't trade-in games. Nor do I sell them. I learned my lesson in that respect.
Unless they suck and I don't enjoy them at all to begin with, but even then.

i've traded in a lot of things i wish i hadn't, like my n64.
im bad when it comes to trading in games, i've lost thousands of dollars to trading things in, i've had 3 ps2's, 3 orig. xbox's, 2 gamecubes, 2 360s, 1 ps3. and all of those were back when they were pretty expensive. im baaadddd

I have never, and probably will never, trade in a game. I have also never sold a game to any stores. I sold a game to a friend, but immediately regretted it, buying it back a month later.
I am attached to my possessions in that way..
I know, I'm weird.
Oh.. and for those wondering what type of games I have.. I have about a quarter of the Nintendo 64 library, a bunch in the Xbox library, and a few from the X360 library as well, obviously. My main gaming following has always been the PC though. There is no end to what I have for the PC.. listing every game ever played, bought, rented, etc., would be impossible at this point. I have everything from Oregon Trail (yeah, the original.. on the HUGE real "floppy" disc[s]), to SimCopter (love it!), to Duke Nukem 1, 2d, 3D, and so on. I played Counterstrike back when it was in its pre-public state.. when it was undergoing testing as a simple indy mod.. and afterwards when it became more popular.. and still today, after it has been swallowed whole by valve and steam.
Big ones?
* Team Fortress Classic (TFC)
* Starcraft
* Every Command & Conquer (C&C) game, including C&C: Renegade (spent 5 years on it)
* Halo (again.. major fan)
Yeah, I love my games. Now.. where to put all those HUGE oldschool game boxes..

I have the Playstation version of Chrono Trigger... not the same at all. The load times make it worthless. Well, that and the fact that it skips now and then, and has the potential to freeze.
Thank God for emulation.

I have every game I've ever bought-- seriously.. I've never gotten rid of a game or a system. I can't name off the ones I have.. but the trade in would only affect newer games (mostly) I have a friend that trades in games all the time and gets new ones with the "discount" from the old... then he borrows them again from people like me that don't trade them in.. so who is the sucker? LOL

I remember Bubsy too.
The amount you get for games nowadays is the main reason why I don't trade in much of anything anymore. Getting $20 at most for a game they will turn around and sell for $55 is a joke. It really doesn't matter if I plan on playing it anymore or not.

I keep all my classic RPGs from all systems still. At one point I printed out a list of every USA released RPG for psx and snes and n64 and went around and bought them. But the one non-rpg game that I will never sell that truly got me to love games is Little Nemo: The Dream Master for NES. I will never sell or trade that game.

I don't normally trade in much of my games--once I have them, I have them. I traded in my Nintendo Gamecube awhile ago, and just a few days ago, my old XBOX. I never played them, so there was no point in keeping them. (I did get rid of my Halo 2 with the XBOX. I know, I shouldn't have... :( but I'll get another one to add to my collection)
I'll never get rid of my Ps2 though, my Socom games, and all of my EA Sports games.

I have a big problem trading games in as they literally ream you on the value as they have since the trend started the day after the 1st gen consoles went on sale. Receiving $10, if that, for a game that they turn around and sell for $30 and up is ludicrous. My last stop at EB Games they were still selling GoW used copies for high $40's. Interested in knowing I asked how much they would buy it for and the guy told me $14. Now even Gamefly is in on the trend, allowing you to trade in for credit on your account. Even games that I find have limited re-playability on the campaign mode, such as Battlefield 2 and Ao2, just aren't worth it for me. Trading in 4-5 games to get enough credit for 1 new one is a tough one.
Of course being able to pull out a copy of an old game and running through the campaign again can be as much fun as when you first grabbed a copy. I still have my old Sega Genesis with the 32X and a handful of games such as Earthworm Jim and Mortal Combat. While it is rare I play them, it is fun to pull them out here and there and have some fun.

I will NEVER get rid of my Dreamcast with the games Space Channel Five and Seaman.
Final Fantasy VIII and Chrono Cross for Playstation
And the Sims/Sims 2. These games are games i can play until i die and never get bored of it
Achievements are nice and all but it's like people aren't even buying the game to play. Just to get the achievements so once they've done that, they bring the game back. I only buy games i know i'll have fun in and love ^.^

Earth Defence Force was defenitly the Bomb. Love that game. ^_^
But as far as the topic, and what ppl are saying, I can understand how you may think the prices are low for trade in values, 20 bucks for a game they will sell used for 55. Okay, so if 20 or 25 bucks isnt fair, then how much do you feel they should give you for the games? Everything depreciates in value once you open it and use them. So lets say your 60 dollar game was used, it depreciates by 10 dollars, now for it to be resold it can has to be sold at 50. So what are they going to give you. look slike they are giveing you 50% of what they can sell it at. Now you could sell it for that if you wanted to spend the time and energy to sell it for 50. But most ppl dont have that ability to do so. Gamestop has to pay employees to take these games catorgorize them, set them up and re-sell them. They need to make a marginal profit off of them. So from what you guys are saying, you expect to make more money off the game then the store you are tradeing it in too. Becouse even if they gave you 30 bucks for it, then they would only be making 20 for it.
Now myself, I usually only trade in when they have an extra deal, aka i can get an extra 40% towards trade in credit.

craigslist/ebay.
the buyer and seller both win.
the buyer can buy it for most likely cheaper than gamestop and the seller can sell it for more than they would get for trading in.
i always consider this line that happened to me.
i traded in my snes, original gameboy, n64 and playstation which each system easily had 15 games each if not more.. (this was when the xbox just came out btw) all that classic stuff that i really regret selling now.
with all of the stuff i sold all i could afford was a gamecube, so i bought a gamecube (no memory card) and had to rent games for it and have my mom buy me a memory card. i got tired of my gamecube so i sold it and got a james bond game for ps2, i ended up selling james bond and basically ended up with nothing.
so i sold all my classic systems and games for nothing in the end.
as long as you dont really care that you are barely getting anything then i guess trading in is fine.. if its just collecting dust then whats the point anyways. but i will never trade in anything anymore for the simple fact that you lose money that way. keeping them will be of greater value to you and your wallet.

I prefer to just never trade my games in because I always end up saying, months down the line "I really want to play that game now..." and I can't cuz I've traded it in. I just get a CD wallet and keep all my games now. It's just so much easier. The tradeback value sucks anyways. $15 back for a brand new game? I mean it's something but not nearly enough. I could sell it on eBay or Amazon for more cash so.... why would I settle for $15? :mvshock:

OMG STRETCH!! I traded everything in from the time I was 7 but it just got ridiculous. I'm serious when I say this : just go on Amazon and see how much the USED copys are going for. When you buy a new DVD or game, just save the case and put the disk into a DVD wallet for safe keeping. When you're ready to trade it in, stop, think for 5 seconds, then decide against it and sell it on Amazon. You can get $27 for Halo 3 if you keep the case. You can get $25 for Devil May Cry for the 360 and $37 for the PS3 version. $30 for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and $60 for Mario Kart (Wii) if you're willing to part with the wheel as well. It just makes more sense :mvsmile:
