What does "referals" mean

So i was searching through the members list and under everyones it says referrals...so far no one I have checked has had one except me.
Does this mean I did something bad?
Or
Something good?
or
Does it not mean anything really at all?

When you sign up for the forums you can add peoples names into "who referd you to the site" for everyone that does that you get one referal
